Is this a sin? I feel it may be lol. Have seen a few about sporting tan/brown and it does actually look lovely, and have seen an excellent close contact saddle to buy although it only comes in tan!??? Do you think i should carry on shopping or go for it? pony is a dark gunmetal grey. Im assuming We would be seriously discriminated against in whp classes ect? thanks

My grey has havannah tack and it looks lovely.

I did a lot of (and won) WH at locl level when first had him- I thought brown tack was preferred for showing??

Nothing looks beeter in showing than a nice clean grey as it shows the effort- and I think brown tack always looks better too!

I have a piebald cob, but she has alot of white on her. I think exceptions should be make in the show ring for these horses, because she has a black head i think brown tack looks disguisting!
So im on the hunt for v v v dark havana.. Although has has black tack at the moment..

I dont think it will be too bad having brown tack on a grey as there isnt another colour to clash with!

Several top class horses (often piebalds) are shown in black tack, just make sure it's good quality and of the correct type.

It's a myth that you'll be "marked down" (if there is such a thing) for having back tack in showing. Correct tack that compliments the horse it the main priority.

Having said that, I prefer brown tack, even on piebalds and greys.

Oh really!! I was told that black tack with incorrect at anything above local level..
I really think black tack would compliment her more than brown. Thanks for pointing that out

I have a Cliff Barnsby two tone saddle Havanna and Royal oak, that is like a dark tan on my grey and it looks lovely, she is a funny grey though as she is dappled, roan but has a fleabitten face and neck that are a deep chestnut so goes with the tack lovely and also brown is usually prefrable(sp) in the hunter classes. Go for it!!

The best way of checking what looks best on horses like yours is to go onto a show photographers website and see what other people in your classes are using. That will tell you far more than any amount of verbal advice! Some of the dark havanas are so dark they are almost black.
We have lots of different colours of horses on the yard, and they all have brown tack (and although we don't have a piebald, if we did, it would still probably have brown tack!)

My chestnut boy wears tan coloured tack for s/j, with a tan close contact saddle, he even has a caramel saddle cloth and looks lush!

However if we were showing I would put him in havana tack, even though it doesn't look so nice on him.

i think this goes back to olden days when brown was for riding and black was for harness.
there is also dress rules for different times of day.

Anna82 - my grey mare has similar markings to your horse - dappled bum and legs, brown fleabitten neck and face. She also has a white blaze( not so obvious now as the rest of her is whiter now she is older) and a pink nose. Is yours of irish origin also? Wonder if they are related.
Sorry i don't have any pics.

Yes she is. she also had a blaze when i got her 3 years ago but now you can't really tell her face is white and flea bitten, now she is getting her summer coat she is more dappled but the fleabitten seems to be spreading alot. The picture in my siggie is from winter when she was clipped out and she always looks whiter in winter too. You will have to get some pictures so that we can compare!

I have black tack for everything except showing, as I do think black looks nicer on a grey.
I got dark havvana for showing as I was always told it was 'correct', as black leather was traditionaly of lesser quality ( the black covers imperfections).
I actually do prefer brown and tan tack...... and if I had a bay or some other colour would have all brown tack.

Much prefer brown tack, the only prob is there are so many different brown variations, finding matching "parts" is a mission!!

my grey mare has havana tack as she looks better in it - personally i only use black if the horse has definate 'black' bits (ie my previous mare was a bright bay abd looked fab with black tack as it set off her black points)

my mare had a dark grey mane and tail but brown splodgy flea bitten bits so brown looked better.

i think now a days its personal choice

I love Havana and tan tack. My boy is pretty much all white and he has dark havana tack for showing which is gorgeous and looks great on him, looks almost black but you know its not. His jumping bridle is more of a light brown which also looks lovely in my opinion anyway. I think you are lucky with a grey as they can wear pretty much any colour and nothing will clash!
