Brrrrr, its that time of year.. pointless rug post.

I hate this time of year, horsey had his LW turnout on yeaterday, brought him in last night and within 15 mins was clammy and too warm, so he was naked last night. Turned out today without rug as its been lovely and tonight had to leave him naked again as he just gets too warm. Supposed to get down to 1 degree tonight. All the other horses are rugged now apart from my boy

He will be clipped shortly but having to leave that as late as poss as he has been known to sweat up when clipped and I couldnt bear to leave him rugless clipped.
Anyone else have 'hot' horses?
 
I'm fairly certain I have a warm horse! ( only had him *nearly* a year).
When it gets to rugging time he always gets itchy and loves a good groom and scratch when the rug comes off! i'm west coast of Scotland so cold, wet and windy here (

) and he is in 100g rug with no neck. There has been frost in the morning for a week or so now!
 
My old cob was a hot horse. Until hes clipped i would just leave him without a rug, he has a natural coat for a reason! Just ignore what everyone else is doing, i did! But at the same time i would check the weather forecast and if it is going to be excessivley cold or windy i would stick a lightweight rug on whilst he is out, i think its better to be too warm then too cold!

Its a nightmare! I hacked out today for 20 minutes, horse slightly sweaty on girth area, put lw turnout on for his 2 hours grazing, came in sweating, put his cooler on then when i was leaving he felt too cold so put a sheet on top of the cooler. He seems to be really hot during the day but then i worry at night because it drops so cold!! I hate rug dilemmas i can never decide what to do for the best. Winter rugs are in the cleaners, clippers are coming out at the weekend!!
 

As a rule I don't usually start rugging mine until November. She is a NF though & the only reason I rug her at all through the Winter is because she drops weight easily & gets very grumpy & miserable when it's wet & windy.

I agree with SnowPatrol. Go by what your horse is telling you & not what everyone else on your yard is doing

Neither of mine are in rugs yet. Both are unclipped (not much point clipping 2 lame horses

But more to the point my house is freezing! I had a routine service of my central heating boiler and they found a gas leak in my house! So they disconnected my gas and haven't been back to reconnect it yet

Thank goodness I have an open log fire, but its not heating the rest of the house. I can see some purchases of small heaters looming if this goes on much longer!

None of ours are rugged yet. The clipped cobs grew coats fast enough, and are fat enough!

and don't seem at all unhappy, Dizz is always warm - she'll go in a l/w with a neck if it gets really cold, although I have heavier rugs for when she's clipped (if we're ever both fit enough at the same time to make it worth clipping

). The NF will have a l/w on when it gets colder as she gets miserable when wet. LL is a total wuss - if he's sound will clip him next weekend as he gets far too warm when ridden, but then need decent weight rugs on otherwise he just stands and shivers and looks pathetic. Big Cob needs rugging a tad more than Little Cob. Foalie Boy is growing a good coat so probably won't be rugged. New Lad is a total wuss, but he's not going out for another month, and when he does he'll be rugged (a boxrest TB with a nice coat, but not one yet suited to the elements).
 
Its that in-between time for one of mine...he's too cold and drops weight without a rug and looks miserable when I go to get him in, if I put a LW on him and he's had a belt round the field he's all sweated up.

Getting clipped this weekend though so that should solve it

I HATE this time of year!! Monty is nearly 30 and a tb and lives out so obviously weight is a worry. At the moment he has a fleece with a no-fill T/O over it (he does have a 100g t/o but he seems warmer in thin layers). He is only rugged at night since it is really warm in the day and he is hairy.

It's annoying though since when I get to the field at night I spend ages waiting around for the temp to drop so i can put it on. Conversely, this morning I was almost late for work since I was waiting around for the temp to rise!

I don't mind when it is cold all the time - because I can rug him all the time. I wish I could just sit at the field all day changing rugs but I constantly stress about it.
 
Mine are still unrugged but being a gypsy cob and a clydesdale are like yaks. They are both young, have plenty of hay at night and are lovely and warm.

They will be clipped and rugged when they come in at night at the end of the month.

Last year, at this time they did have no fill rugs on at night as it was very wet/windy and generally miserable. Our field has hardly any natural shelter, hence putting on the rug just to keep the worst of the rain and wind off and they did seem to appreciate this.

Cold is not the problem, horses easily cope with this, but the wet can be more difficult.

In days past, my TBs, would be rugged up when out at night t this time of year as they were thin skinned, no coat and elderly.
