Six days on box rest for bruised foot, greatly improved now, although still slightly short turning on hard ground this morning, day 6.

Have to be wary of keeping him in too long, as had a terrible cough last year (2 months on steroids) and made all necessary changes to make it a dust-free, ammonia-free environment. SO much better this year!

Will turn him out tomorrow but if relatively sound after 48 hours on 'normal' routine (i.e. out 7am to 4pm, then bring in) how long before you'd add the weight of a rider?

My rule is the same as one of the barefoot gurus in the US. If the horse is sound to walk it's sound to ride. Movement does feet good, but I'd stick to straight lines on surfaces that won't go up inside the hoof.

Thanks, PvBs ... It's a difficult one, though ... because although I know him and his gait, I am not really qualified to judge him 'completely sound.'

When you're a bit over-aware following an injury, you can end up identifying problems which have actually always been there!

Thanks, ycmb - that was my gut feeling: 2 days out in the field, then all being well, a few days walking out on a smooth straight road and take it from there ...

I'm in the early stages of battling a bruise/abscess with my horse (left front) he's in a small paddock as he has arthritis and box rest would just exacebate that.

He became lame on the day his annual jabs were due, so that was handy, he had no heat in his foot but did react to testers. The first day of poulticing we had a lot of pus but none since and he is still pretty much as lame as he was the first day, but now with some heat in the hoof.

I made him a boot with nappies, a cut to shape pad made from an old exercise boot and plenty of duct tape. It's very frustrating though isn't it, glad to hear your boy is on the mend, hope you're both back on the road soon.

Bruises can be stubborn little blighters! I usually don't box rest for them, just ice the hoof if there is heat.

I am also of the camp that if they are sound in walk, then ride them at walk. If they are sound in trot, then ride them in trot!

Thanks, skint1 ... hope you get yours sorted soon!

Thanks too, PorkChop and PvB ... if he looks sound in the morning, I'll pop on and see what we've got :)
