Twice now my pony has had multiple abscesses during hard ground so wonder if bruising is part of the issue. Sound now finally after 15 days of poulticing. Thoughts appreciated.

Sorry youve had problems, glad he's sound at last. First thought is test for Cushings if you haven't already. Second thought is what minerals is he getting and what is he fed?

Was there a lot of retained sole in the dry weather? That's caused me problems two summers in a row now - coming off in chunks with the recent rain.

If anyone knows why it causes footsore / abscess I'd appreciate some info - trimmer was vague.

It's always puzzled me too Sel. I think it's possibly because it's too dead, too hard and doesn't flex at all, so it ends up acting like lumps of stone stuck in the feet, causing bruising. I'd never seen it until last year, when my cob had a ton of it. Luckily he stayed sound though.

I had a farrier say something similar... My TB got a bruise because his sole was "too hard"... I guess if the outer structure doesn't flex then the soft structure underneath takes all the impact? Hash tag failing at physics?

It made no sense to me until I saw it crack and bits fall out. The crazing looked like the lines on a toroises shell and 'pebbles' about an inch wide fell out of his feet.
