Just a question really. How quickly would a bruise on the sole present itsself? Both the physical bruise and any lameness?

I ask as I have hacked out today and come across a very stoney path. well it was more like shale really. Pony walked down it really well considering he has only been barefoot for 6 months and hasn't hacked for 3 months. He was fine coming back down it on the way back too. He was sound the whole time, I gave his feet a good pick and check over when we got back and he walked out fine to the field an hour later.

I have never had to deal with hoof bruises before so have no idea if they are an instant thing or can they be slow presenting?

Thanks everyone.

Mine used to get brusied soles before changing feed. She would be hopping lame. I kept her turned out as didn't want her on hard ground. She had bute for the first couple of days and after 2 days she wasn't lame, I gave her a week off just to be sure. Since changing feed though i've never had a problem (she was on Happy Hoof, now on Fast Fibre)

Would your horse become lame straight away? I'm sure he is fine, but we were on the stones for quite a while but he was very comfortable and still was on going out into the field. Just dont want to turn up to a lame pony tomorrow. x

Mine took 3 days to show discomfort, wasn't lame as such, just took an odd step every half dozen or so. It was enough to worry me and so he had the vet who diagnosed a bruise. It took about 4 weeks to get him properly right again & about 5 week for the bruise to actually be visible!!

Thank you guy's. I will keep an eye on him for the next few days then. I'm sure he was fine, but you never know do you. If he does happen to have a bruise, how is it best treated?

Thanks

Thanks everyone.

I have never had to deal with it before (and touch wood he's fine) but I suppose a barefoot horse hacking over stoney ground may one day lead to a bruise so it;s best to be prepared.
