Just wondered whether anyone had any advice or experience of bruised tendons. We think the pony bashed the back of her leg out hunting on Sat which made her lame and her leg puff up a bit. She has also got a patch of mud fever about 4 inches below her knee on the back of the leg which is in a strange place so assumed she broke the skin slightly when she whacked herself and then it got infected with mudfever through the mud. The leg was only puffy for one day and she was mildly lame for about 2 days with a slight bit of unlevelness for 2 more days after that. There was heat in the leg over the broken skin bit for 2 days but isn't there anymore. She was ridden this morning at an amble with a trot or two and was sound as a pound.

Obviously we don't want to risk any more damage so just wondered if anyone had any advice. I've just spoken to our vet and explained what happened and he said to exercise her but not to take her hunting for a week or two. If her leg puffs up after exercise then to get in touch with him but it doesn't sound too major.

Would love to hear any advice or other's people's stories.

Thanks.

One of mine bruised his tendon when he was confined to his stable a year ago for treatment to his other leg and was on restricted exercise, he managed to bash his tendon in his stable at the same time!- he very slightly lacerated his leg and was a bit sore on it/swollen. My vet said he had bruised it a bit and gave antibiotics for the cuts and bute, we gave him a few days total rest and it was back to normal very quickly and could be exercised. I think there are different degrees of bruising tendons though, luckily mine was ok, hopefully your horse will be the same, def agree with your Vet- if it blows up after exercise I would def get it checked out/scanned.
Good luck!

my boy struck into the back of his leg(with a hind leg)while eventing, just above his boot,it was scanned, not tears,so walked everyday building up to one hour over 3 weeks then,l carried on as normal with no problems at all, even doing a 3day event
