So Lucy is a greyhound so we are used to the usual injuries and dramas.

Shes not had any incidents or injuries over the past 24 hrs as far as we are aware (she screams the place down if she gets a dead leg for example ?) but have been out for short periods where it’s possible that she’s done something daft (she thinks she’s a gazelle and jumps the baby gates)

So suddenly this evening I’ve found a huge bruise on her chest and I’m wondering what on earth has happened ??

She’s not fussed about me touching it, doesn’t seem tender or sore but there’s a slight bit of skin breakage so I’m crossing fingers it’s an injury rather than something worse ?? advice is to take her into vets to check for blood disorders as bruising is apparently quite rare in dogs. So I’m going to need all the vibes available that we aren’t dealing with something worse than a bad bump ????

She’s the sweetest dog ever, completely mental but I adore her ❤️ but for this to appear overnight is bloody scary ?

It must have been a hell of a whack! I hope that’s what it is.

This is my concern, it’s right over ribs too so for her to be completely unphased about me prodding it doesn’t seem right to me? She will wake up with a dead leg and come screaming her head off on three legs for you to magically rub it better, so for her to be so unbothered by a large bruise is a bit bizarre ?

Well I’ve never seen a bruise like it. Ffee is pale yellow with pink skin and she gets scrapes but I’ve not seen anything like that. Will be interesting to see what the vet says. ?

Have she been walking in woods or long grass/bushes?

It looks like the rash a tick bite can cause - the surrounding skin immune response to the bite can sometimes turn very red. You said there’s a break in the skin, could it be a bite mark?

My dogs would nibble like mad any reachable places a tick managed to bite, to dislodge the tick, leaving a patch of redness without any tick remaining.

Has she scraped herself jumping the baby gate? Looks more scrape than bruise.

There’s only the teeniest bit of skin scraped off when you look closely, I’ve not noticed any excessive licking in the area either. Her belly is quite weird, where she’s that blue/grey colour with pink skin she often looks like a plucked bird underneath ?

ETA : baby gate is smooth metal and she clears it with ease, we don’t usually close it before we go out as little pipsqueak needs to get to his water and Lucy can jump it anyway. I don’t think I closed it today but it’s possible pipsqueak has pushed it shut while scratching his booty on it ???‍♀️ and she’s misjudged it and it’s moved while she was jumping it?

Does look like she's knocked herself... Sighthounds can be prone to ridiculous amounts of bruising. Would ask about TXA / Tranexamic acid if you do go to vet (would probably recommend if unsure what's happened) as that can help with resolving it

random thought.... do you walk her in a harness ? vera (whip x collie/grey) also has no hair underneath, she wears a harness and once it seemed to rub her quite badly and it looked similar to this. admit she had been a bit wild and was leaping about and generally being a complete pain, not walking nicely as normal.

She is in a harness for longer woods walks but she’s only been out on quick walks after work in her collar so not possible this time.

Vet agrees very hard bash, probably coming down on baby gate. Lucky not to have broken ribs given sighthound lack of padding!

How is she now? All better?

Yep, as the bruising faded there was a round mark of broken skin that you couldn’t see clearly at first. Matches the bed post ? looks like shes gone to jump off the bed and landed on it …
Must have bloody hurt, but she hasn’t stopped jumping on the bed ???‍♀️

Still zooming around like a nut nut on speed so no long term damage ?

My collie had a similar but worse (bleeding) injury and the vet thought it looked consistent with her having jumped or clambered over something, a wall he suggested.
I’m pretty sure that wasn’t correct I’m her case but might yours have done that?

Edited to say just seen the above! Yes that’s what she did!
Mines stills mystery! No way would she have climbed or jumped anything
