Just a quick background story..... On Monday our shire x was trimmed, he lives out 24/7 and is fine. On Wednesday he was very footy on all four feet. Our field was frozen solid, rutted and very very icy.

As a precaution we kept him in for 48hrs just in case it was laminitis and called the farrier who said he was 95% sure it was due to trim/ground but call vet the next day if no better.

By thurs am he was vastly improved, prob 85% better and by Friday he was 98% sound (even in trot on grass - his decision). He is currently going out for a couple of hours twice a day and in at night, till the ground improves.

Anyway this morning on his back left hoof he has got three small areas of bruising, about the size of a 1p. They are approx 3cm from the sole. Could this just be bruising??

He is so much better and I know if it was laminitis he wouldn't be but still want to be careful xxx
 
I would guess this would just be bruising. But, obviously, with everything you are unsure of, keep an eye on him, and if they get worse or he becomes footy again, get a vet out.
 
Definately would do that. As I say ATM he is fine (and he is a MASSIVE baby - so we would know if he wasn't) I just saw the bruising this morning and started worrying again but he is sound.
 
Usually if you can see bruising on their feet it has already had its time as it is now about to disappear - just keep an eye on him though :)
 
No horse should be sore after a trim.

Please make sure the farrier isn't taking tissue from the sole or the frog. If you post a clean pic of the sole, we should be able to tell if that's been the case.

Otherwise - keep a close eye on any footiness with the frosty grass going to spring grass.

But so close after a trim, my money is it's the trim that was too aggressive.
 
Hmm, do you realise that many bruises on the hoof wall are actually growing out, it's takes 6 weeks of hoof growth to see the bruises lower down on the wall. For it to only be one one foot i would suggest that he (or a fieldmate) has tood on his coronet and causes.


Can you give his soles a good clean and see if there are any bruises on the soles? That might be the cause of your lameness but if he has lived out all his life a bit of frozen ground shouldn't cripple him

Harry has bruises in his hoof wall which are bruises growing out but his soles have a few bruises on as well (no lameness though) hence why I have gone for some hoof boots.

This is the first winter he's lived out and until this week we've had no real freezing cold weather. He's never had shoes off until this winter either. Our fields this week were like rock and he's a big horse.
