My old pony is 19 and the dentist was up a few weeks ago to check his teeth, said they were fine, just needed a maintenence rasp but he said as the pony gets older the gaps between his teeth become wider and its easier for food to get caught between them and cause gum infections. So he said I should clear out the gunk between his incisors about once a week using a tooth pick. Now the pony is such a pet and I've had him for 12 years so he really trusts me and I can do anything with him but he still didn't really like me scraping between his teeth and I kept poking him in the gums by accident as he moved and the wooden tooth picks are quite sharp. I've tried using a toothbrush which works ok if he'll stay still, it's amazing how high he can put his head up, he looks like a giraffe!!! I tried putting toothpaste on it to see if he prefers minty flavour but he's still not too impressed, I was just wondering does anyone else brush they're horses teeth and is there any special sort of tooth brush or toothpaste available for horses, I've had a google but hav'nt found anything!!
