i have been looking into affliating my mare maybe next year (have never affliated before) and from what i can understand she would be registered as a grade c start away? and what is the smalled height class is there, she is 15.3 and never affliated before either.

can someone explain to the dumb blonde (me) how it works ect.

thank you

Only done juniors so far but smallest senior class I think is British Novice at 90 cm. Yes think all horses start at grade C

yep, as long as she hasnt been imported you can start off grade c, british novice is the first 'proper' class at 90cm, tho some places do the new 75, 85cm classes depending where you are in the country! i think there are more down south, theres none up here!
so its bnov - 90cms, discovery 1.00, newcomers 1.10, fox 1.20.
you jump out of a class when you win over a certain amount.
you could jump on a ticket, so you dont have to affiliate, if you just want to try it 1st.
hope that helps!

The smallest class BSJA does for horses is 70cm open, this means you can ride any registered horse in the class. 80cm open the same then you get onto the 90cm tracks at British Novice, Discovery at 1.0m, Newcomers at 1.10m, Foxhunter at 1.20m.

Just to make it more complicated for you there are also 1.0m opens, 1.05 opens, 1.15 opens etc. They also run an Amateur series beginning at 90cm right up to 1.20m. Opens and Amateur classes are for any registered horse so you could ride a Grade A horse in them.

TBH not many venues run the 70cm and 80cm open classes. Enjoy your jumping.

You can do classes from 70cm upward at some shows. There are classes to suit all levels now so you should have a really good choice.

your horse will be registered as grade c automatically until she wins £1000 then she will become grade B , smallest height you can do is 70cm at an intro show, to qualify for second rounds it will be british novice 90cms (bout 3 foot) and there are amateur qualifiers at 90cms as well

hope that helps

Sorry dont mean to highjack but going to affiliate tomorrow, my horse has been registered before so do I just need to change the name of owner for her and register me properly??? She has a BSJA number in her passport!

Its so confusing??? Will it be sorted by sunday as I want to enter my first BSJa show (exciting!!!!!)

thank you for all the answers much clearer now, just one last question, say hyperthetical they win over £1000 in within the registered year do they become grade b from then or from the start of the next registered year?

As soon as they have won the money they move up a grade. The winnings of £1000 is Notional winnings not actual winnings. Actual winnings will be considerably more but it is the Notional winnings that matter in the grading of a horse or to dictate what classes they are eligible for or no longer eligible for.

To be honest, if you are unsure about how it works or what to do then you may be just as well ringing the BSJA membership office and asking them - they are generally pretty helpful.

I ahve just re-registered mine after a few years break - the only thing I found annoying is that, although they accept scanned copies of all your ID docs (passport etc) you still have to send the originals by post as well!

As for the original OPs question - yes horse will start at Grade C and, depending what area you are in will depend what sort of classes are available but the lowest class starts at 70cm as others have advised. You soon get to learn which venues are the ones most likely to include the smaller opens (70cm, 80cm etc) and which stick to the more traditional British Novice, Disc, Newcomer type format.
