Decided to get my arse in gear and go and do some BSJA with the two boys, thinking it would be another new place for Liberty (and his first proper party with me other than clear round down the road), and it would be nice for William to jump on a surface what with the ground having been hard at his last few events.

Got to yard early yesterday morning, and managed to set the tack room alarm off which sounded like all hell was breaking loose - in the end had to ring a friend who was asleep in bed and ask him for the reset code

Loaded the two boys up, and set off thinking that this was probably a terrible idea, it being now 7.30am and having to get round several junctions of the M25 to get to Norton Heath. I haven't been there since I moved yard and even though the traffic was much better than expected I still got there too late for the clear round before the BN.

Entered Liberty in the BN, and didn't have much hope of us getting round as they have lots of bright fillers. Still, he was good, wobbled lots, plenty of "EEEK I can't possibley do that - oh well what is it - well perhaps I might lurch over it from a standstill" in the space of a second! Had one stop going into the double (didn't think it advisable to jump in from a standstill) then unfortunately stopped at the next to last, took a couple of steps back then jumped it. Went in again at the end HC and he cantered round the whole thing beautifully, it was two phase so jumped the first of the JO then retired as there were "new" fences after that and I wanted him to finish on a good note.

This is him second time round and OMG he looks huge! His ears are like a mile in front of me!

Then swapped them over, and I have to say this is where naive young geldings come into their own! I had no yelling, no snapped baler twine when one went out of sight - brilliant! William was entered in the 105 and the NC. Warmed up quite flat, although he did nearly put another sjer into orbit when I asked for a flying change and W just went for the flying bit!

Went in quite early, jumped a fairly good round although started drifting alarmingly right on a line of oxer - four strides to one stride double which was oxer - upright. I have put the photo below of us over the first oxer - didn't realise I'd been trying to correct the drift THAT much! Unfortunately smacked the first in the JO, just kept him forward after that incase there weren't too many double clears but alas no prize money. Time would have been good enough for 3rd though. In the NC he had clearly forgotten he had front legs and had the 1st and 3rd down, he hit the third quite hard and after that jumped much much better, so actually I was quite pleased with him in the end.

Here's the drift I was talking about! Anyone think of any witty captions?!

Hi,

They both look great, im so jealous wish I could have gone to Norton Heath BSJA yesterday instead of working! I love jumping on their outside arena its lovely isnt it.

Well done on them, they are very bright scary fillers for babys to jump. How up to height was the NC? Norton Heath's fences are usually very up to height.

I'd say it was up to height, except maybe the first few fences. For the NC and the Fox they do it with JO seperately, all the other classes are 2 phase. I watched the Discovery for example and it was noticeable that the course was not too up to height, especially the first half, but the JO was, and looked a lot more than 10cms higher! They have a weekend show coming up soon, might be this weekend, but I guess that clashes for you with SoE?

I don't believe there is any written rule that the JO can only be 10cms higher than the first round

I think it is just used as a general rule. I agree though that a lot of 2-phase classes do look considerably bigger in the JO section

Maybe cos he hasn't been eventing yet

. He's actually a year older than William, but a year behind in his head. He is lovely to sit on, if he gets in deep (which he didn't in that photo) you can feel how supple he is, esp through the shoulders, whereas William's technique feels much more like he's bouncing off a spring board with all four feet then holding his breath..... completely understand if that makes no sense
