I was looking at buying a green tweed jacket due to the colour of my horse and the colours I have chosen to ride him in, however, looked at the BSJA website. Is it OK to wear a green tweed jacket whilst competing in BSJA or would that be committing a complete faux pas?

Only if she's also wearing a skull cap and taking flyers at everything Weezy :p;)

(And before you all jump on me - I'm an Eventer  )

OP - yes tweed is perfectly acceptable. Go out there and have fun and stuff what anyone else thinks. :)

Oh yes, that is true LOL!

I sometimes wear my tweed OP, it is warmer than my SJ jacket, and I even pair it with my ProTector hat, so look ridiculous but I really don't care :D

Why are Show Jumpers against tweed? To be fair, I am a show jumper but I am from Australia so not used to the British Custom! I was only going to choose Tweed for colour co-ordination reasons (I also used to show my horses back home so everything has to look perfect!).

May have to settle for the block green colour then :( Just was going to look a bit too harsh colourwise! Can anybody recommend a brand that produce dark green show jumping jackets?

Hehe. And have a 5-point breast plate on for everything (even with a dressage saddle).

Tell me, why do none of the eventers at the high levels wear all that tweed stuff? And watching the WEG eventing SJ, it was only the Brits I think that were wearing skull caps - all the others had practical, modern show jumping helmets.

Its just such a quintessential old British thing isn't it, like Aston Martins and nice cups of tea - you certainly don't see any eventers in tweed in Sweden! People would think they'd raided their granny's cupboards!

(OP - I'm just baiting, wear whatever you feel comfortable in and think looks nice)

Modern showjumping helmets! Please, little_flea, be careful what you write. It's still early and I nearly fell off my chair in shock when I read of such apparitions. *Retreats in horror to contemplate*

See, you are just pushing the boundaries of tradition - like a straight male who both moisturises and does dressage.

I like to mix things up myself - the other day my clothes were all Pikeur, mis-matched with a skull-cap with a pink pom-pom cover (because it is cute), ultra-showjumpery curved zip De Niro boots, on a horse in a grackle, dressage saddle and tendon boots. That's just how I roll - keeps everybody guessing what my discipline is*

*Which is mainly looking like I've been covered in prittstick and dragged through the tackroom.

Tweed is only used eventing for Nov and below :)

You can read that statement as often as you like and I think you'll find I have managed to keep it both eventing and SJing stereotype free. Points please.... ;)

well 'back in the day' tweed was always correct for novice sj'ers up to newcomers level sj, nov eventing and nov dressage so no you wont look daft at all!

But you will see Malin Baryard-Johnsson wearing a rather aweful tweed showjumping!

OP, I think you leg is being very gently pulled by the other forum members. Its been a bit of a thing on here to compare and contrast what the showjumpers and event riders wear, its usually done in pretty good humour and nobody gets upset by it. However, traditionally tweed is the done thing in showing and lower level eventing. Showjumping seems to be much more bling.

Speaking as an eventing mummy, whose daughter occasionally ventures over into the 'dark side' of showjumping, and will have to be going out doing some newcomers and discovery this year in preparation for next year, there seems to be a lot of differences in what each discipline wears. My daughter tries to fit in with what she is doing and we dont take any notice. Wear what you wish to wear and what is comfortable, looks good and suits your horse. Go out and beat all the eventers in their tweed and come and tell us all about it. We dont mind, really........

Thanks TheoryX1 - still find it quite funny how the BSJA take jacket colours quite seriously, I understand if somebody were to turn up in hot pink or something but I dont mind Tweed :p

I think its a tradition thing here but it is changing IMO. I event and never wear tweed anymore (wear my plain black show jacket), at the last BE thing I went to at the weekend not that many wore tweed either.

Either will look smart so go for whichever you prefer :)!

There is a bit of a stereotype but I event most and only have black jackets and a couple of SJing hats too so it works both ways!

Little Flea - I'm glad our eventers weren't wearing the same hats as the US lot, they really lacked taste imo!

I wear a tweed for dressage, is that just as bad??? My buttons has come off my black jacket 18 months ago and havent got round to putting them back on!!

I wear tweed because I am a traditionalist and I think it looks really smart, however, last year I qualified for the Area Festivals, I went to a comp on a Tues and a different venue (the comp was on the Sat) to prepare, I wore Tweed, as I always do, I got an ok %. Went to the AF, it was the same judge :o!!!!! I wore my navy jacket, as it was a "special" occasion! I got 7% more, and I went wrong :( off the same judge, all because I was dressed as a dressage rider instead of an eventer, his way of going cannot of changed that dramatically :p

Forgot to say, it was the same test too :D

I realised that I had totally crossed to the dark side & become a "show jumper" when I asked an eventer friend to jump my new 5 year old round the BN, then was horrified when he appeared wearing a tweed jacket & skull cap with tags. He then teased me non stop when he came to help me at the next show & I appeared in white breeches, John Whitaker jacket & hat with silvery bit on. I think wear what you feel smart & comfortable in, but I do secretly love my show jumpery outfit.
