Hi all

I have owned my ex racer 9 yr old TB for 4 months now. We are really getting to know each other and he is a lovely boy!
My issue at the moment is when i ask for the canter transition he bucks and throws himself about. Sometimes its only little, others its surprising how i stay on!
I can push him through and he will settle but i am sure one day he will have me off!
He had a full mot when i bought him, teeth, back etc so he is either getting excited and testing me out or there is something else going on.
Anyone else had similar and how did u get through it??

We had this problem start out of the blue last December, it turned out to be his saddle which we had fitted in April last year but because he had changed shape a bit it was pinching him either side of his withers, as we were going into the canter transition on the bend in the school it was pressing down and pinching him. Might be wor ruling out a saddle problem, ours was reflocked and it all settled down after.

My boy was very poor when i bought him and although he is looking much better he is still lacking alot of muscle behind! This Could be why!

Could well be then - with mine it was a combination of saddle (like Shannonandtay) suggested - and him being weak behind. Both were interlinked with him being in poor condition (shape had changed so saddle didn't fit).

Good luck with getting it sorted whatever the cause turns out to be :) I had to get help with schooling mine afterwards because I lost my confidence with the canter transitions! Still not quite there with his back end so have put schooling on hold until he is stronger.

There is any number of reasons why this happens, saddle, back, feet, teeth etc etc. (thats my disclaimer out the way)

I expect that because your horse does it, you are tensing, which in turn will make it more likely... its a downward circle sometimes.

I would do a few exercises, which include sitting very light and quiet when asking for the upward transition as well as the down.

I would also ask for the canter strike off over a single pole, again sitting very quietly.

Personally I would tend to put a horse like this on the lunge first, for a swift walk trot canter warm up on each rein. One of my horses can and will have a massive Weee Heee Yeee Haaa into canter if he is fresh, with legs shooting out in all directions, he has been known to do this up to 3 times on the upward transition, and it is just freshness, so if I know he is a little fresh, I will lunge him before I get on. (It saves me having a bruised bottom!)
