My horse is the most quiet, responsive ride in the Winter. He is up to weight and fed appropriately during the Winter but in Summer he turns into a raging monster. He bucks like mad for about 10 minutes when I put the saddle on him and it puts me right of riding him. I have had his back and teeth checked and everything is ok. It must be the grass. Does anyone else have this problem and if so what solutions do you have? Even keeping him in at night does no good.

Has he always done this? TBH it sounds like pain or some kind of evasion. If.you say you've had his back checked then it could be something else but it doesn't sound quite right. My friend's pony didn't have has back problems picked up until he got a second opinion from the vet, back lady didn't see it.

Assuming it isn't pain related I'd get a good instructor to watch you riding to see if they can pinpoint what the issue is. Lil was a real tantrum thrower when i first got her but its almost completely stopped now as she's learned it doesn't get her anywhere.

He's always done it when he's on good grass on the summer. Take away the grass and put him in a bare paddock and feed him hay he's ok. Does my head in. It will start soon again as the grass is coming. My instructor checked him over as she is a certified shiatsu practitioner and says he's ok and not to give him too much grass. Not easy in the summer. I think you are right as it must be some kind of evasion. We have done a lot of dressage and never had any comments about him not being right. Thanks for your advice

It sounds as if it is grass related which could mean a lack of Magnesium. Try giving a calmer that is magnesium based.

Does he do it all summer or just the spring and autumn. Grass can be low in magnesium when there is a flush.
