Bucking/kicking out in transitions

Hi

Our 4 year old cob mare has started to kick out her back legs and/or buck when asked to go into trot or canter. I strongly feel that it's not exuberance as her ears tend to go back when she does it. Once into the movement she's fine and goes well but only if you manage to sit out the transition! Has anyone got any advice please?

Is she sound? I would probably start by checking her saddle fits and whether there's any soreness in her back (maybe a physio visit). Then consider the vet.

Yes, she's sound. Had her back checked out recently

hmmm, i would suggest the vet then, if you think the behaviour is out of character and you are concerned.

I would get his saddle and back checked out. Your vet could probably recommend a good chiropractor if there is nothing obvious. It may be just a case of muscle release or a bit of manipulation which is best done by a qualified equine chiro. We had a pony mare who did this periodically into canter and it was always a sign that her back needed a bit of manipulation.
