I have a tb who has just come back into work. When he is excited he dolphins, he leaps, bucks and twists all of this is going forward in canter or on the spot.I know he will get over it because we have been there before when he had a previous injury and had time off. I can sit it all out but wondered if anyone else had similiar problems and how they dealt with them.He is very athletic and agile and likes to do this in his paddock .God knows how I stay on sometimes.I have the back lady coming out next week to check him out but I think its just exuberance he isnt trying to throw me.Any ideas welcome!!!!!!!

How old is he? What are you feeding him? How much exercise and turnout is he getting? How long did he have off work, and what injury did he have?
Sounds like he's excited to be back in work, bit of a feisty TB. If it's not a problem for you then I'd keep working him as normal and he'll get over it, if it's a problem then stick some calmer down his throat before you work him or in his regular feed.
Only other tips are use a neckstrap or one of those "oh sh!t" straps!

i use my voice, a very loud "NO, GO FORWARD" a few times tends to stop them quicker than anything else. i try to keep their head up as well, in case they really try to send me into orbit!
if it is just high jinks, then it's just a case of sticking on until it passes... if there's a chance that it might be a teeth/back/saddle issue, i check all those asap, in the interests of self-preservation!

Hi
He is six now had him since a four year old and work him 6 days a week plenty of schooling and hacks. He can go from a ploddy lazy boy to a complete loon in seconds- if his adrenalin goes up.He is out from 9 until 5 every day but I have not altered his feed because he loses weight .He is on alpha with oil large scoop twice a day dodson and horrell pasture mix small scoop or build up depending on weight and sugar beet kwik version.Large haylage and hay net at night and lives for his feed.Could be his haylage .He is feisty and lazy hates going forward into the bit which we are working on at moment. He has had time off for mild tendon injury so have just started cantering again and I think he is just excited. Had this all last year after ligament injury .Just looking for quick fix that isnt there ha ha he will get over it.I can always grab martingale but prefer to keep firm contact on my reins whilst hes being a p--t.

All checked apart from back doing that next week.I shout pack it in same difference really just have to get through it and wait until excitement passes.Perhaps I should ride in afternoons until hes calmed down but its not always convenient .Thanks for the input

Yep my boy does this on occasion when having a strop or when worked up about something and not listening. He gets a real pony club boot in the sides and sent forwards as otherwise he will dip his head and rodeo until I come off. The boot usually ends in a leap forwards and buck but does tend to sort him out as I drive him forwards then and keep a firm contact to stop him getting his head down. I also tend to adopt a slightly behind the vertical seat when I feel him going so I can sit real deep into the antics!!! Don't we just love them!!

haylage and pasture mix sent our TB a bit like that, cut the pasture mix and replace it with Allen & Page Weight Gain, and possibly sugarbeet could make him fizzy pops!

Failing that we just left ours to get unfit! - he was much easier that way......

D&H Build up and pasture mix both have molasses and barley in them which sends both my Tb's nuts...! Would use a build up cube or a non barley/low sugar mix like Allen and Page Ride and Relax.... might help?

I have both my TB's on Winergy Equillibrium complete feeds now and they are doing brilliantly on it!!!

My Tb is on baileys No 4 top line cubes and is a dope on a rope!! Hes best on oil based feeds, he has cherry showshine chaff, top spec and alfa beet (he loses weight very easily and is a fussy feeder) to make it more interesting. Tried pasture mix for an ickle bit of energy in the summer but it sent him absolutely crazy!!!!

He is a nut in the field all the time but a little star once the saddle is on!!

Good luck in sorting it out!!
