My girl was going brilliantly, we hadn't had much bucking lately but now she has now started bucking while you're getting on - she will do a small buck, then back off, then possibly a small rear before you've even had chance to sit on her. She bucked this morning while mounting even when someone was holding her.

She only does it when mounting from the mounting block in the school, not when your mounting from the block outside the school, same as she only bucks when in the school, never out hacking or at a show.

Any way I can prevent this? When she did it this morning, i walked her back to the mounting block and tried again and she was fine.

Take it all back, saddle, teeth etc has been checked? If its only in the school, sounds to me like its a way to get out of work? Do you have to mount her in the school, or can you mount on yard and walk to school?

I would do a few sessions of taking her in the school, get on walk around and get off, and repeat, til she realises that no matter what, her bucking will not get her out of doing any work!

Some horses just don't like the school - not much of a consolation, but I do feel your pain! My horse was always a grass horse, but after lots of work in the outdoor school (inc. lunging) he has become much better.

I totally agree, it is a way of getting out of work! I can get on from the mounting block outside of the school then ride her in the school so i dont have to get on in the school but i bought her as a project so i want to try and sort this ''issue'' out.

pretend you are backing her and instead of getting straight on do lots of jumping around beside her, then jumping with one foot in stirrup, then lifting yourself up and down, then lying across etc etc.

My mare used to do this. After all the checks had been done it was put down to a cold back.

After a couple of periods of being "off colour" she had a gastroscopy and was found to have a small amount of grade 2 squamous ulcers.

Since being treated for these she has never bucked since. Not upon mounting or when working.
