I am now scared of cantering my little pony as she keeps on bucking. it is totally unpredictable, and it it usally after she has galloped unexpectedly. The next one will definately lead to a buck! I think its just shes a bit exitable, but there not little bucks she practicly headstands, and every time she has bucked so far i have come off

Yes they are very big bucks!, And she is not in any pain btw.
Any replys greatly recieved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would keep her head up and drive her on but if it is unpredictable that might be difficult.

Monty Roberts recommends a method to stop a horse bucking, which involves putting a rope on top of top teeth and anchoring it to saddle.

You have to loose school the horse to MAKE it buck. the idea is to make bucking uncomfortable for him but not you. See if you can buy or borrow the book or email Kelly Marks.

Ok thankss for the tip i will try this, is that the monty roberts buck stop cus i think i have heard of that, but i know little about!

I will try it anyway!

Thaaanks:)

Hmm... does she do it on a lunge line or anything? It could be because she feels unbalanced maybe. My mare Missy always does it as she goes in canter. We now have a handle permanently attached to the front of the saddle... (i'm not proud but it keeps me in the saddle).
Have you got a martingale? Are her bucks predictable? Chances are she's a bit unbalanced and actually if she manages to ditch you she gets out of doing it.

Maybe try lunging or long lining her to help?

Neckstrap, and kep her head UP all the time- brace your reins against her neck, and carry a stick. My sister schooled a little 12.2hh who'd learnt if she bucked she did no real work becuase the children were too scared. She quickly learnt that if she bucked, Alice stayed on and then she got belted twice and made to go forwards again. Really push it- and stiuck your lower leg rammed forwards and heels down and grab her mane and neckstrap and lean back. If she's really worrying you then ask around for brave and mad little jockeys. We saw the pony I mentioned above recently and she did the loveliest clear round the 1' class. She bears no grudge from being told off (although at the time she was very shocked by it!).

Hey Ditsy Mare; thanks for the post!!!!!!!! Nope her bucks are completely unpredictable! And i can never sit to them haha:L

Hiaa NoSurrender; Thanks for post!!!!! but if i give her a tap with the whip - (tried!) She bucks even more!!!!!

Thaaaaanks for replys i'll try the handle on the saddle and the neckstrap!

Yep- Twinkle did too. She literally took Alice up and down the school for a good 10 minutes, with Alice giving her a whack after every buck. It was literally who won, won for life! Sounds cruel, but the child riding her was 7 years old- she could have been seriously hurt. After 2 rides like this, Twinkle was literally putty in Al's hands- and they went round the 2'6 together clear after T tried her tricks round the 2' class with her mini jockey. She's a poppet now.

Wow!

Thanks for the advice! it'll probs end up with me hanging on to the ponys maine for dear life!

But if it stops em bucking its worth ago!!

Thanks for post!!!!!!

If you're finding it hard to keep her head up, attack two loops of baling twine to the D-rings on the front of your saddle (if you use about 7-10inches of twine for each loop they should be a good size) and thread your reins through and buckle them again. Then pick your reins up as normal, holding them behind the twine - though you can choose to move your hands forward as obviously the twine will move slightly and stuff. Then when she goes to buck, just lift your hands up! The twine will take most of the pressure so you don't have to work as hard and can concentrate more on sitting up and staying on while she realizes that she cant really buck anyway!
My last instructor told me to try that and it worked on my pony and saved my arms!
Also as other people have said - ride forwards positively and keep her head up. Monty Roberts buck stop is great! Also, riding with shorter stirrups so you can use your knee rolls better always seems to help me!

It goes under the top lip and around the gum, not the teeth. He recommends it ONLY as a last resort and only to be used by very experienced trainers.
I really wouldn't go there!!
