Looking for recommendations for a ‘budget’ 4x4 for towing. Looking to really spend £800-1000 on a cheap 4x4 just for towing and travelling to the yard a couple of times a week and to basically have as a messy dog/horse car that I don’t really mind if it blows up in 12-18 months because it was so cheap sort of car. We will have a decent reliable car if there is an emergency or something but OH is already losing patience with the amount of mud and crud in our estate car!

OH has said to look at Jeep Grand Cherokee as, as much as he hates them, they’re cheap to buy. I just wondered what other budget 4x4’s people used for towing or could recommend. I’m hoping to be towing an Ifor 510 and one 13.2 pony although potentially more.

Also, a friend has offered me the use of her trailer and having tested it a lot this weekend the pony travels really well in it, what insurance or breakdown cover will I need to cover me, car, borrowed trailer etc?

I used to have a Daihatsu Fourtrak, its really budget and far from luxurious but a good all round 4x4 for what you need and I think you will find one that fits your budget

You could be lucky and get an old Pajero for that. H or J reg. Fourtraks are getting rare as they rot badly at that sort of age.

My friend had a Cherokee. It was a money pit; the only car I've ever seen develop a hole in the petrol tank - literally, as well as metaphorically!!

When you're spending that type of money I think you have to expect that there may be a few issues to sort out. I have a grand Cherokee and apart from a set of tyres and 2 new brake calipers it hasnt cost me a penny.

Yes totally agree Wheels, I was originally looking at spending £3-4k on Disco but OH said it's really not worth it as it it blows up I'll have lost a nice chunk of money, but if a £800-£1k car blows up or I have to spend £500 sorting it out I'm not going to be too gutted.

Pajeros are looking a good shout at the moment!

Ford maverick/Nissan terrano. I brought one for £500 p reg.
Spent the grand total of £20 in maintance in over 3 years, not that bad on fuel and was used by a fair few people when there posh 4x4's won't work. And it wasn't rusty/rubbish to look at, aged very well. I sold it because my OH brought me a jeep cheeroke (newish one) no issues as yet and lovely to drive, (maverick was better) but if I could have the old maverick back I would, sold it for £350 too though the sales!

Nissan Terranos are a great workhorse, if you can find one with a reasonable mileage and decent bodywork. I'd be wary of elderly imports like the Pajero, you could be buying yourself a load of trouble.

Great advice on the 4x4's and don't forget to make sure the towing weights are legal for your borrowed horse trailer (not all 4x4's can legally tow a horse trailer). Regarding breakdown cover, check to see if you are covered by the owner's policy. If you aren't, make sure you talk to a reputable provider!!
