Budget and important things I will need?

So I think OH is weakening and I can start looking into rehoming a dog. He keeps changing his mind about it, says we can think about it in a few months, the time goes past and he says no again.

I would like some ideas on monthly costs if possible for food, insurance etc and what I'll need to get before bringing new dog home.

So far I have thought of:
bed
collar and lead
food/water bowls
toys

Vaccinations/neutering.

Uninsured vets bills. All policies will have an excess.

Depending on breed, clipping and dog coats.

Dog treats.

Kennel bills if you go away and use kennels.

etc etc etc
 
P.S.

Food costs will largely depend on size and what you feed. Much dearer if any special diets are required for any reason.

You won't be able to insure a dog over the age of seven or so, unless you already have it insured by that age.
 
TBH I would think really carefully about getting a dog if your OH is that uncertain. What if you get it and he changes his mind again or resents the dog once you have it? The dog will either end up unhappy and in a tense environment or back in rescue.
 
If you do get a dog (as with oneofthepack, dont do it if OH not completely sure), the first thing to do is ensure it is vaccinated, wormed and microchipped, cost varies from area to area. The cost of food will vary depending on the breed and size of your dog(as will kennel fees if you ever go away). Insurance will vary also on breed and size of dog.
 
Um...

Water and feed bowls, a couple of quid, ditto lead and collar. Bed £20, microchipping £12 and clipping/grooming £20, insurnace £7 per month.

Don't buy toys! Or treats! A good quality dried dog food will cost about 50p per day for a 20Kg dog.

Large 36" long crate £56.99.

Time and inclination and patience... endless. Make sure you both want the dog, we already had two dogs, then my husband brought home a terrier puppy, and I really don't like her, she doesn't do anything wrong, I just don't like small rough coated dogs, and I expect we will always disagree about her... we've had her since May and I still don't like her at all.

do buy treats! but as training tools, eg for teaching your dog to sit, down (lay down) walk to heel, recall etc (but recall will come later f the dog is able to be trusted offlead)

are you looking to rehome a rescue? if so neutering/spaying *SHOULD* have already been done, microchips are sometimes done and some dogs come with leads/collars (sometimes coats) if they have been in foster homes. also rescues have basic commands taught to them on the lead usually.

other costs -
crate (price depending on size)
bed
vaccinations
id tag (vey cheap, however DO NOT put your dogs name on it!)
food
feed/water bowls
feed bowl mats if required
poo bags (another cheapo - can just buy cheap nappy bags they do just as well!)
collars/leads/coats if needed
microchip


a big thick waterproof coat and hard wearng wellies and a heavy duty torch for you on those cold/dark/rainy walks that you have to do!

Although I do really want a dog, as you have said,I want OH to be sure as well. He can just be frustrating about it sometimes. I would be responsible for the dog, like I am with the horses- although OH does help out occasionaly.

Yes, I am looking for a rescue, we both like greyhounds and I confess to liking one of CALA's rescues too.

Now, we both work full time but, dog will be coming to work with us and will have a walk at lunch time,plus time at the yard morning and evenings (about an hour each time) to have a run around, then an hour walk in the evening.

Does this sound fair on the dog? Please be honest. They will have company all the time, and I can take breaks to go for a walk round the block during the day for a leg stretch/ toilet break (for the dog).

sounds very fair to me!

most greyhounds (there are the odd few that need more) only need two 30 minute walks a day, so what you have to offer is great! and the company all the time they will love!

you sound like a great candidate to own a grey (well be owned by one

How is she getting on by the way?

Just need to convince the OH as although he did saw awwwww when I showed him the photo- which rarely happens- he is quite keen on a grey. Men huh? Any suggestions?

I have heard that greys are pretty laid back and do not need huge amounts of excercise, on the whole. I hope that does not come accross as me sounding lazy, I just mean I think they would be more suitable for our lifestyle rather than a collie for example.

Does that mean I'll have to choose? Seeing as my OH has finally said we can get a dog and that he wants a grey, I might have to comprimise.

Glad your feeling better.

I used to be JAGS, but changed to Kuki_Nage in August (I think). I have just got round to putting a festive siggie on though.
