Hi,
I need a heavyweight turnout (think 300-350gsm) but am short on £! Have been checking out budget ones, and wondered if you could let me know if you have tried any of them and if I would be wasting my money!
I need a 6'6'', def with good shoulder pleats as rugs tend to pull across my mares shoulders.
Have been looking at the following, any comments good or bad would be great, or other recommendations would be brilliant!

The last few are more than I'd like to spend ideally, but if the cheaper ones are rubbish then I'd rather spend more and have something that will last more than a few wears!

We've used the shires middle weight ones for two seasons now, and they've been fantastic. Our horses are ISH and irish cob x , so good shouldered middleweights, and they fit great...

Not on the list, but our heavy weights are Derby House, and they were good value rugs too...

Oh dear, was worried I would get replies like that. Cheap = crap, pricey = better!
Better to know now rather than waste the pennies.
Thanks for the help, the premier equine does look good and roomey too.

I went to my local horse sales (York) and got a brand new Pessoa in the auction there for £35. Not sure of it's weight, but it is pretty thick. Do you have a local auction you could try?

Closest auction is Leominster, bit of a trek from here unfortunatly.

Honey08 - I was after a derby house one, but they don't have her size in the heavyweight, which is a pain as I have their mediumweight which is fab. With the Shires one, the cheapest one has 600 denier outer, keep hearing on here though that 600 denier isn't fully waterproof though?

so i think the heavyweight combo would work out at something around £74 (maths not my strong point!) i have a couple of their rugs and they are very nice - similar fit to Premier Equine

Did you see the recent H&H rug review - the one on this front page was voted best value heavyweight turnout -

http://swish-equestrian.co.uk/

I got an email saying they have 15% off until sunday code is TW15

Do you have any idea how thick I am - I actually read that!! There is no hope for me!!
That £ off code is fab too, brings it down to premier equine money. Typically I can't find the mag with the article in now, did they rate premier equine too? Lots at the yard seem to think they are fab, but I've not had one from them before.

lol!

I think they did - there was about 10 or 15 in it - they said the new rambo with the two different parts was the best new design and best fit but thats very expensive!!

Also there was a masta zing in it i think which got a good review...

Glosgirl - I have the 1800d ones fit wise theyre good for chunky ponies shall we say! i own a 14.2 FATTY and his fits him lovely doesn't seem to pull across his chest and is deep enough it covers his sides however doesn't completely cover his tum! - not sure how to compare them fit wise to Rambo/Shires as never owned either :o

Im sure your mare is gorgeous :D

Premier Equine - the best for price and quality. They arrive next day as well!!!
They have a different rug on promotion each month, so its good to keep checking out their web site.

Someone on my yard has the JHL rug, it is a lovely cut and has a nice wrap around tail flap. It is basically the Mark Todd heavy weight without the price tag, I think it might be a slower denier. I would buy one like a shot is I had the pennies! Her horse is a chunky little cob and it fits him really well.

Derby House, they do some budge heavy weight rugs, my lads got his second year out of his and it's never sprung a leak, can't beat em for the price.

Try derby house, iv got there HW and had it 2 years now, just been reproofed (going into 3rd winter) and appart from horse ripping the front when leaning over fence it is great, nice and wide my boy has fairly wide chest, he is also a 6'6 and it is generous on size i find...it fits ontop of him even with his 4layers underneath!!

I also use JHL rugs and they have lasted years.

I bought a cheap Axiom full neck HW (think it was £35) 2 yrs ago through ebay - I haven't bothered to have it cleaned or reproofed, but it is still as good as it was when I got it - amazing value IMO.

I love my premier equine!!!
I heard swish are having a display stock sale? looks alright on there!
My derby house 'duvet' is living on after 4 hard years - did replace the velcro on the neck though, kept popping open. - buckles work much better.
Would it be worth suggesting a medium weight with a fleece on underneath??

Another vote for Axiom from me!

Bought one on ebay last year - a heavy weight (350ish g) with 1200 denier outer for £35 so very good value. The fit is great and its actually my favourite rug. Also has a reflextive strip/ thread in the binding which I think is a great idea.

Also a big fan of shires. Tend to pick up mine for a good price in Countrywide.

Wouldn't bother with Rhinegold. I have one heavy weight and all the filling has collapsed/sunk to the bottom and is not very waterproof.
