Hi I have been looking at Stables and the Cost WOW .....

I can buy with free Del. a 10ft by 8ft Workshop for £380.00

Do you think this would make a good stable for 14'2 Cob not in all time only when really bad weather ?

I will have to do some mod's Kick boards and stable door .....

Much too small - you will end up spending fortune trying to reinforce it and change the door and it wont be high enough. http://www.nfed.co.uk/directorystable.htm Mike Corcoran Timber buildings are really reasonable (£475 for 12x12 shelter) - if it were me I would get the 12x12 field shelter and a gate to hang on the front - either board the gate on the inside or use the wire mesh you can by (I zip tied wire mesh to mine - the small stuff with 2" holes) to stop feet going through or if pony is really good you could just put a rope across the front. He gives you all the bits and you put it up - you may want to buy kick boards but may find you don't need them.

I think a lot would depend on the quality of the shed. I would put my pony (who is a lot smaller than yours though) in my really well built shed of the same size but that shed cost me £1200

Unless its a really sturdy shiplap (not overlap) shed using thick boards a really good roof and properly lined no I wouldnt do it and I think the size would be a bit tight too

Something else to bear in mind is that part of the structural stablity of these sheds includes the floor, with no floor (assume you plan to put it on concrete?) you would be risking it I think

My shed was provided by a company that make stables, it isnt a great deal different from a stable, it even has ventilation and a stable door, it was built to my specifications but like I said it was a lot more expensive than an off the shelf shed, I only keep chickens in it but should I find myself short of a stable I would certainly put the smallest pony in there

You would need to reinforce the walls, shed walls wouldn't stand for long against a determined battering from a hoof. As said, the door would probably be too small, and I think dimension-wise, it's also a bit small.

My dad built me my pair of stables for under £1000 (I think closer to £600), solid wall to about 4'6, then Yorkshire boarding.

Quick, send me your Dad's phone number - it could be a new career for him, lots of work this side of the Pennines!!

Haha, he's down in Somerset, sorry :p I do keep telling him to retire early (DEFRA vet) and go into woodwork as he makes some beautiful stuff.

You would need ear plugs though :D :D :D :D

I think you will find that shed is built on 2'x2' (50mmx50mm) framing with cladding of thin boards. As others have said, forget it.

But a stable may not cost you too much if you can enlisted a male with DIY skills (yes, we do have our uses!).

My web site is playing up at the moment but if you go to http://www.morrichhighlandponies.co.uk/newprojects.htm you should be able to see what I did.

Some of the 2'x3' framing and boards had to be replaced and I lashed out for some new box section for the roof (discounted because it was a canceled order and an odd size!). But it was still a LOT cheaper than new. I didn't really need to put it on concrete foundations either.

Stables/field shelters are often advertised free to good home on condition they are removed and taken away. Even if they are a wreck, some of the timbers are often worth salvaging and you might make one good one out of several wrecks.

So, you'll have to learn to be a human magpie, like me!:D

first this size is too small for a 14.2hh

Next sheds are not built to withstand the abuse a horse will give it or provide the ventilation a horse requires.

Reason stable costs so much to build is they are built for quality as well as lasting.

Best getting a proper stable because at the end the day you will end up spending just as much on modifying a shed and replacing the damaged parts then you will on a new stable

Thought I might as well show what my dad built me.

afterflood.jpg

He made it all- doors and everything. Partition about 8' high in the middle, again about 4'6 of solid wall and the rest Yorkshire boarding so they could see each other.

Hmm, photo is coming out tiny. hopefully you can zoom in on it. I have just been informed he built them for me instead of buying me a pony (logic?!) and would do it differently next time. They worked though, and the plus is you can build them to whatever size you want.

Minimum dimensions are really gonna be 10 X 12; anything other than this (apart from something for a small pony like a shetland) will be way too small and in only a short time you'll want to be knocking down and starting again!!

Also..... it would be false economy to do anything with so flimsy materials; apparently in one of his previous homes, my traddie boy had a field shelter built for him! But unfortunately they did it "on the cheap" and it was basically made of bits of plywood and thin wood. He got up to it, thought it was wonderful! - and so then rubbed his bum against it, and by all accounts the whole thing just fell down around him and he was left standing but was the only thing that was! :)

Also........ dunno if anyone else has said this, but you might need to check up on planning regs for your area.

you can get box profile tin sheets from mole valley etc.

In our area you need planning unless it is mobile and you are prepared to move it every so often - makes no difference if no floor - still need planning.

However, I am very much of the "put it up, get caught, then apply" school of thought.... as long as you think carefully about where you are putting it and it is not affecting anyone around you then you have a good chance of being passed - if not you may have to take it down.
