Hi, Im going to be building a menage at my yard and just wanted some advise. im going to build a standard 20x40 and just wondered what surface you lot have, how many tonnes it took and how much it cost.

I like the fibre/sand/wax mixes but they are all very pricey. I dont like sand or sand and rubber mixes as they tend to get quite deep. Any help would be great!

Thanks :) I looked into wood fibre and it tends to rot away! i need something thats going to last. Preff a firbe/sand/wax mix like the andrew bowen one, but not so pricey! It also depends how many tonnes of this type of surface is needed.

Yard I am at has wood chip surface, and that's been down for about 4 years now I think and is completely fine. Graded and rolled once a week, doesn't seem to be rotting from what I can see. No idea how much/cost of what went down though.

One thing I will say, is when I am practising dressage tests etc, the surface can slip a little when doing tighter turns, also not very keen on jumping on it. For basic schooling it works very well, although when riding on a different surface (sand/fiber/rubbery mix) the horse does feel a lot more confident in their paces and IMO I think this is because they feel where they are placing their feet is more secure.

If it's going to be outside, make sure you get a surface that will drain away easily through the drainage system. Nothing worse than a boggy school.

I am a showjumper and will be buying, selling, producing young horses so I will need a sturdy school. I have seen the wax surfaces outdoors (weston lawns, marchington ect) and they dont seem to flood but they are the top end surfaces of these type. I need a more budget version! Ive seen them used and they look and ride nice but I have no idea how many tonnes it takes to fill a 20x40 and how much people have paid for various surfaces :)
