Hi we are new. Has anyone ever built their own sandschool from scratch by themselves or would it be better to get the professionals in. We have the opportunity to do it ourselves but are unsure if it will be worth it moneywise or not.......any ideas?

We done ours ourselves. We were quoted roughly 20k by pros but we done it for 10k, so quite a huge saving !

10k saving sounds better already. The problem i think will be the drainage as the area has been un-used for years and it is going to take a lot of hard graft to re-build the stables and build a sandschool. Thank you for your help.

To build an arena yourself you will need to be a groundworker, machine driver, labourer, surveyor, fencing contractor etc. I have seen some very good DIY arenas and equally some absolutely awful ones.

If you posess some of the skills required it will be easier to keep costs down by doing some of the work yourself and then project managing the tasks you can't do. For example, you may be excellent at fencing but have never driven a digger before. Therefore, do the fencing yourself and get a groundworks company in to do the excavations.

The key to undertaking any of this yourself is having sound knowledge of the processes involved from start to finish. This will help you avoid problems before they arise and also to be confident that the build is going as it should at every stage. You may be able to save £000's by doing the arena yourself but if it isn't done properly it will cost you double to have a proffessional come out and put it right.

Do your research, identify your strengths and weaknesses and work from there. We have a diagram of a typical arena build here http://www.mainlandaggregates.co.uk/dynamic-diagram.asp?id=1 It will give you a few pointers on the different stages.

Hope this helps!
