Hello

Unfortunately we have lost the cattle barn we rented that the five boys used to winter in over night, only one of them really needs to come in overnight.

Now i'm in a better paid job i can buy materials to have a stable a small tackroom/feed room and a small overhang for hay/haylage OH will build it for me but i'm wondering on sizes its going to have a flat slanted roof - as its easier apparently and because its not going to be on a concrete base, should be sturdier.

The one who needs to come in is a 14.3hh Welsh D who is very tidy and isn't the type to hoon around unless he's out hacking ;) and my biggest is a 15.3hh Lipizzaner - who is short backed, as per breed standard. So is only really as long as my welsh D...

So how big/small do you think ? The tack room doesnt need to be huge as will only have a few feed bins, stacked boxes containing rugs and saddle racks will put up shelving for smalleer things like tack boxes etc.

Hay store doesn't need to be huge either we have big sqaure haylage bales every year so needs to be wide enough to two side by side - width wise - if that makes sense....

anyway sizes anyone???

Sorry for long post :)

Merry Eves-mess :D

I would have stables as a minimum of 12x12 12x14 would be perfect, a feed room possibly 12x16 so you can hang wet rugs and store other stuff in it aswell, not sure on hay store depends how much you want to store

I would build a pair of 12 x 12's at a minimum (better a 14 x 14 & a 12 x 12), then you can use both for stabling if necessary, or the 2nd one can double as feed store & hay store.
You can never have enough storage space :)
To be honest, all mine have a pitched roof (bar one old 1970's dounble field shelter), as you need to be really careful with flat/sloping roof - where you position it makes a lot of difference if very windy as it can be ripped right off much more easily.

And a merry eves-ness to you too! :D

build the biggest you possibly can, you can buy hay in the summer for half the price it is in winter so storage is always useful.
I have 1x 17.1hh, 1 x14.2hh and 1 x 8hh and I have 7 x 4m by 4m stables (13.1 feet) and they are all full !!!

I wouldn't have anything more than a small pony in anything less than 12 by 12

I have two 12' x 14' and one 12' x 16' stables. My biggest horse is a 15.3hh hw cob and he looks fine in either size stable, they are certainly not too big for him. The smallest neddy is my 15.1hh 2yo, she is fine too.

My feed room and rug rooms are both 12' x 8'.

Good luck with the new buildings!

Will definitely go 12x12 then as the 15.3hh is still growing and if for any reason he needed to be stabled he could rather than go smaller and only the others can use it but not him... I was thinking of doing that - having two stables - but we have to be very careful with neighbors and such as its a conservation area - probably should of mentioned that ;)

So i was thinking 5x12 for feed/tack room so its long and narrow and i've now had the best idea..sliding slatted for the one side of the overhang and a slatted back for it as well and open front with slip rails .... what do you think? still no 100% on the size for that though maybe 8x10??

That is what i was worried about but its pretty sheltered where i want and the shed its replacing has the same roof and has stood strong for 8years so will hopefully be okay it has big conifers at the back of it its also up on a sort of miniture bank so drainage is very good, was going to put grass matts with rubber mats on top for stable as that is what my boss has done for her new movable stables :)
