what would I need...me and other half going to build a field shelter this weekend...cheap as possible please/scrap yard items lol!! so I am guessing some metal sheets, and some timber telegraph poles?? its just for somewhere dry suzy can go into out of the elements this winter....any ideas guys and of cost?? xx
 
OK.

We were doing one last weekend. Had been looking at prefabs, etc, couldn't find anything cheaper than $1500 before tax and delivery, and even then we'd still have had to erect it ourselves. Quote for a similar size from my Contractors was $4000!


16' x 8' (because the marine ply boards come in 8' lengths so it is convenient)

6 x 10' posts (4x4) for corner and centre uprights
12 x 8' posts (4x4) for bracing
8 x 8' marine ply
6 x 8' planks for joists
joist hangers
various other metal angle bits, nails etc
galvanised sheeting for roof
waterproofing paint
paint because I like my sheds green ;)

Looking at the receipts in front of me that has come to about $800. I'll claim all the tax back on the farm so the total will be less than that. We couldn't be bothered to rummage around in the barns for scraps so just raided Home Depot (B&Q to you, same thing right down to the orange bibs!) If you have materials lying around the place you can no doubt do it a lot cheaper. For one horse it can be a lot smaller of course, have you got a Council Reclamation Centre nearby? That's where I would go first for materials if I was in the UK.

Honestly, when you take into account materials, time, blah blah it IS cheaper to just go buy one!
If shelter is needed, why not make one of those cross shaped walls out of straw and tarp it?

That will do the job, it will look lovely of course, but functional. Not something I could do though, if you boarded a horse with me what would be your impression if I said "Oh, that heap of straw and tarp that is the shelter" ?

Most of my Boarders are Quarter Horses, for QH, read belly on legs, they'd start at the bottom and systematically devour straw bales too. :D ;) On the other hand, breakfast in bed? Cool!

How is Little Stig now?
 
I can sum Little Stig up in one word.....NAUGHTY!
We had a fright a couple of weeks back, where he had shimmied under the leccy fence and under the main fence to go "visiting" the local playgroup a field away. Came down for the farrier and he was nowhere to be seen.
The lady tells me quite sweetly "yes he comes most tuesdays and thursdays for his apples"
Little toad is always in his field when I get there at tea time though!
And he has a mane now:D
He now also hacks out with smallest son!

Ted's mum - just make sure you stay the right side of the planning laws. I was told a 3 sided structure with no solid floor would be fine and not need planning permission. That has proved incorrect, and I am going through the in's and out's of it all now.

It would be worth checking with your local council, save heartache and a lot of extra work later.

Gah, yes sorry, I forget about planning permits and red tape.

No one in our Municipality cares as long as I am not building a 120' barn and calling it an indoor riding arena, call it a drive shed and that's OK though:confused: a shelter, or four, or five, is nothing on a registered horse farm, advantages of horses being classed as agricultural not pets.;)
 
I know someone in somerset who sells shelters - £450 for a 12x12 and £750 for a 24x12. Much cheaper to buy a pre made one than get all the materials as I looked in to it (my father is a carpenter so would've made him do it!) I have a 12x12 shelter with a 12x12 stable attached (as hay/feed room) and it was £950 and very well built.

Its where mine have just come from. Only draw back is you MUST collect as no delivery facilities, but have to say, solid and sound, and above all easy to erect!
You will find the guy on Ebay, he is based in Frome.

:eek: Crikey! If you don't have to spend loads on gas that would be worth it.
 
Rather than sending loads of pm's - company is called Mike Corcoran Sheds. Details can be found on Yell.com! Does sell via ebay as well. Super quality for the price, but do have to pick it up. I got a 24x12 stable/field shelter combo in a long wheel base high top van easily
 
Not wishing to make you all sick, but I collected scrap wood, only bought the uprights, ply for roof and kick boards, roof felt and the screws and nails to hold it all together. That is how I made 2 12 x 24 ft shelters with 12 x 12 tackroom with raised wooden floor for................ around £700.

Much hard work, but worth it. And don't be misled ny the scrap wood bit, I'll try to upload a pic, if I have one :)

Not a very good pic, was taken before they were finished. I don't think they look like they're made out of scrap lol!!!!
