my mum is taking her dog to crufts this year but went to a training night yesterday and overheard the judge say none of the dogs had any muscle on. the dog isnt fat and i take him to agility but he definately isnt as well muscled as he should be. he gets one or two 20 minute walks a day and has a balanced dry food. i know hillwork is good for building muscle but there are no hills (not even tiny ones) close enough to walk to so that cant be done till the weekend. what else else can we do with him to help him gain some definition? he is 2 years old

Brisk pavement walking. Three or four 20 minute sessions a day and build up to 40 minutes at a time.

What breed as you may have to target specific muscle groups?

Loose lead pavement walking - you don't want to any pulling as this will build the wrong muscles. Keep changing sides and routes as it is easy to get in a routine and then discover you have slight differences in the muscles on each side.

Controlled swimming is very good. I prefer to use the local horse pool as in the hydrotherapy tanks the dog can learn to coast with its rear legs

Agree, roadwork, sandwork, swimming and as Satinbaze I use a horse pool for the dogs, makes them work a bit harder. Or a treadmill if you have access to one. I also bike my young dog.

thanks all ill start with the pavement walking and tell my mum about the swimming for her to look into, goigle says theres a few places round my way that do it. thanks again
