I need some advice. I am now doing walk work with my horse after almost 3 months box rest. This is ridden walk work as he is easier to ride than lead. He is almost turned out in a small pen in day. Can anyone give me any advice for exercises to do in the school with him to keep it interesting as its getting boring already!! I have a month to go

Just about to start the same:( can you go out for hacks at all, I plan on doing alternate days in school and on roads, plus if allowed pole exercises, even if not allowed over them you can use them to work through and round, place them in different shapes and play around them, it can help give you both a focus and is good for keeping them on a really true circle, square or whatever you choose, need to get my thinking cap on:)
Otherwise loads of transitions, be really accurate and count how many you can fit in within a centre line or on a 20 metre circle etc.

My vets recommendations have always been the same.

AT LEAST 2 weeks of hand walk, if horse is hard to handle then ridden walk on soft surface, as little circles as you can, so no hacking out or anything. Start by 5 min and increase up to 40 min.

Then one to two weeks where you progressively introduce trot. At first just a circle to each side and increase up to 10min with lots of transitions. At the end of the second week you can go for a short hack.

The canter work only starts at the 4th/5th week and same as trot. Start with just a circle and then increase.

I always try to have the horse engaged in different frames to work the topline (aka don't let them just walk around the arena to wherever they want).
