I have had my newest ex racer for just over a year now. He has had a quiet life with me (he evented in his previous home) I do lots of hacking mainly hill work along the ridgeway etc and steady canter work on our gallop (maybe 5,6 times a month) I ride in the school about 2x a week and jump about 1x a fortnight. I also Lunge and longrein and some days he will just go on the walker.
I try and vary everything as much as I can as he is not the type that would be happy in the school 5x a week!
Anyway I can never seem to get anough muscle along his back, His neck and bum look fab (imo) but he looks rubbish inhand!
Im desperate to get him out doing more things but he just doesnt look right.
Anyone got any tips for building up back muscles etc.

Im not trying to sound completely thick by the way Im just very bad at wording things!!

I use 'Equitop Myoplast', its designed to build lean muscle and works amazingly. It has turned some of my horses around in a month! You have to buy it via your vet and its expencive, but does exactly what it says it will do, builds lean muscle. Only thing I find is that it does make them a bit fizzy when they first go on it. Good luck with your horse :)

I have a similar problem to you (ex-racers!!), and have been advised by my physio that plenty of long and low work is key to building up back muscle. A lot of people also swear by a good lunging regime, either in side reins, a chambon or a pessoa/pessoa copy. My horse is also on Equitop Myoplast, though it's too early to see any results yet.
