My mare came in tonight with a chunk out of her heel bulb. It looks sliced so she must have caught it with her back foot hooning around. She's not lame at all. I was going to bathe it in salt water or put anti septic cream on. Which would be best?

I like to use stockholm tar after cleaning its antiseptic very gunky and will keep it clean. You could do both.

I personally wouldn't use Sotckholm Tar as it is necrotic and I certainly wouldn't like to put it on a cut myself as it would be really quite painful I think! My test for things like that is that if I wouldn't put it on one of my own cuts then I wouldn't put it on my horse either ;-)

Is it definately a cut and not an abscess blow? Sometimes you can have abscesses that appear very quickly and blow out very quickly. Is it a horizontal cut?

I would highly recommend 'Honey Heal' by Red Horse Products - I have used it for loads of things and it really is great - as well as adhering well to wounds so helps to stop infection getting in. Clean it with some salt water first and then put some cream on as Cellie says (whether that is Honey Heal, or some other mild antiseptic).

First of all, how deep is it?
If it is just superficial, clean it with salt water, and put some wound gel on.
If it affects the deeper tissues, or appears dirty, or oozing blood or pus, you need the vet to attend, as it is an area where infection can have some nasty consequences.

Hope it heals quickly.

Its definately a cut. Its a horizontal flap that is still attached. I put some sudacreme on it last night and will hibiscrub it later when she comes in.

Just a skin flap?
Sounds like you should be ok, as long as you keep an eye on it for any signs of infection.

She should be fine. Im guessing that they all had a mad half hour and she stood on her own foot.

She isn't lame at all as I lunged her this morning. Hibiscrub should keep the germs at bay.
