I have a Welsh Sec A gelding who is 4 in May. I notices today that he seems REALLY bum high. Now I am most definatly not an expert in youngster or even ponies - I was straight onto horses - so I am not sure if its right or not?

My vet did ask if he was a premmie foal, as he had a very dished face and in her opinion looked a fair bit younger than he is stated as being in his passport. Now he came from a local stud and I do not doubt the dates at all. He isnt bad breeding - Tiffwyl , Waxwing & Tullibardine - but I guess that sometimes they can produce well, less than the best.

I dont have any recent pics - totally forgot to get today! I do have an older one from when I first got him and he was just 2 - June 2010

And this is from October last year

I know that a horses skeleton is still growing/changing up till about 7 years old, so I assume he will level out? Or does he just look typical of a welshie?

I looked at the first photo and thought he looked fine. Then I saw the second and see what you mean. His back seems dipped, and his bum high. I'm no expert though  so what do others think?

He should even up a bit over the next year - so don't worry too much. :)

I don't see anything wrong in either photo, he's still got alot of growing to do in both of them. Could you take a new photo and post it?

Alot of sec A's have dished heads and alot of 'shape' to their backs (not to the degree of a dipped or swayed back conformation fault).

I bought a 14.3hh ex racer, just turned 4, she then went from level to bum high then level again, she ended up at nearly 15.3hh!! I would say its normal to be croup high at this age.

I have an Irish Draft/Welsh D who was very croup high until late 2010, then he evened up, now he's had a growth spurt and is bum high again, he's 5 in April!

My rising 7yo is bum high, my friend's 13yo event pony is also bum high, some of them just are, although at 4yo I'd imagine he'd level out.

My 10 year old mare is slightly bum high so I have come to terms with her having c**p conformation LOL. But he will even out and when he builds up muscle over his back it will look less dipped :D

Cheers folks. I only really thought it looked funny today as got a proper look at him without a rug off from a distance. The second pic may be odd as he has his head up compared to head down.

Also, he was measured at 11.1hh in his passport..............I am guessing that I am going to have to get him measured again? But when? I dont plant to show him or anything, but he has been a bit of a jumper so depending on what Emma gets into he will do. lol.
