Hi- looking for some advice.
I bought my rising 5 year old over height connie in February and since then he has grown loads. He was imported from Ireland so I was thinking maybe this being possibly the first time he’s been given good warmth, shelter and hard feed as well as haylage that he’s had the extra energy to grow. However I am worried he will stay this downhill. Do you think he will continue to grow and level out?
I’m also considering turning him out over summer to give him a break and to see whether he evens up as currently it is quite hard to ride him as he is so uneven and I’m worried it may be hurting his joints.

TIA x

When mine has been bum high I have stripped back any schooling and just hacked. I also didn't start jumping him at all (he's 5 now) as he just never seemed to be level for long enough!

I would continue to ride personally to keep him trim with the grass flushing, but not do any schooling.

Mine had a month off over winter and gets 2 week breaks here and there.

yeah any bum high ones I get I either turn away or just do very light hacking. just working on stretching them over their back and getting them straight, along with some bend and flex.
I was biting my tongue on this, but I had to say, I'm Irish and our horses do actually get warmth, shelter, feed and Haylage:p a horse will naturally still be growing at 5.

Op for what it's worth my now 9 year old connie in the last 18 months has grown an inch...

They really do take ages to mature

Enjoy some hacking, they even out eventually, my Welsh D will grow until he’s about 8, he’s three just now and goes bum high rather regularly. This is why I don’t properly break them in until their fourth spring then spend a year hacking as they are uneven more than they aren’t.

My rising 7 yr old ID (ok not a Connie but still Irish!) is bum high at the moment too. He was on the trailer with my friend's 16.2 warmblood the other day - from the front they look the same but from the back he looks about 3" bigger! We've not done much recently because he's had saddle issues but now he's back in work we're hacking lots and doing a small amount in the school once a week but he's that bit older again.

sorry I didn’t mean to insult you I actually really respect horses from Ireland I should have been more specific as in I know his history was just living in a field with no rug on for years as he came over very skinny and with bad rain scald over his entire back

Some do level up after 5 but most dont at 6 the skeleton is fully mature an stops changing so it is muscle and fat that makes the difference then. If he is a lot bum high I doubt that will change much but building muscle and strength with bring him up in front when ridden

don't worry mine was so bum high I thought if he put his head down I would be sliding over it.:D He is 6 this month and a totally different horse. Far more level and a perfect ride. Just got to give it time.

MIne got good feed and care so no excuses but was still not as good as I had hoped for a very long time.

At riding 5 he was not that good. Did little with him except the basics so he was broken and rideable but that was it.
Started really doing stuff at the beg. of this year ie 5 yrs and 7 months and no longer an uneven baby. His growth and maturity between 5 years 7 months and 5 yrs 11 months has been amazing. He is where he should be.

Every few days I look at him and he has developed some more. Patience I'm afraid :D:D:D

Some level up and some don't. I have a Dutch wb who was very level all through his early years and then got to 6 and went a little bum high and there he has stayed.

We bought a 15.1 bum high 2y/o straight out of racing. We thought it reasonable to hope she'd grow at least 1 or 2 inches.

She is now a 15.1 bum high 4 y/o. :(
