My mare got a bad bump on the side of her knee when she fell and bumped it badly on a x-country fence. It was stitched, bandaged for about a month and has healed well, but she is left with a horrible huge lump. All the heat is out of it now and its hard.
Does anyone know if anything would help reduce the size of it. Would splintex or DMSO work? Has anyone used these? or do you think its there for life?
Thanks

the bump is scar tissue - the fibres lay down in a random pattern which is why it is lumpy rather than smooth like the original tissue, it will be pretty hard to get rid of now, in humans we sometimes work through and break down scar tissue then allow it to heal while using exercises to help the scar tissue lay down in a more correct alignment hence reducing the 'lumpiness' but more immportantly so it functions in a more 'correct' manner, there is no reason why this couldnlt be done with a horse but it will take quite a long time and is not the most pleasent experience for the patient, you could try stretch exercises and see if over time the fibrous tissue will reduce a bit.

Hi - thanks - are you sure its scar tissue. The scar itself is fairly small and quite flat and most of the hair has grown back over it? Its more the large bump under the skin that I'm thinking about?
