Bumpy, lumpy horse?

Went to get horse in this morning around 10am (out over night) and he came in sweating after not letting me near him for 10minutes:rolleyes: but as he cooled down i noticed all up his neck was covered in tiny bumps? i thought it may be fly bites but he also had some on the top of his lower leg and bum but he had a sheet on over night so surely the flies wouldn't of been able to get him there? a friend (who hasnt seen him) suggested hives but from looking at pictures of hives his bumps and are much smaller
Any idea want theses could be?
 
it could be a reaction to a fly bite! My mare got bitten a few yrs ago, while she had problems with her liver enzymes and she had a lump under her girth the size of my hand! I kept an eye on it for a few days and it just kept getting bigger, so got the vet out and by that time she was covered in small lumps all over her body. she just needed an antihistamine injection and she was right as rain.

Since then she does occassionally get small lumps, think the liver problems have made her a little weaker than she was before!

My mare came with those lumps last summer. There was a nettle patch in her field that was flattened so I guessed she'd been rolling in them and had caused that reaction. She is thin skinned and particularly wimpy. I bathed her in a very very dilute hibiscrub wash and they went within 24 hours. If they stay longer I'd get vet out.
 
Yes! but there is lots more.. there is a few nettle patches at the fence line of the fields too
I don't have any hibiscrub wash.. shall i rush to the shops now or use something similar? see how he gets on tonight and then go from there?
 
Does he find them itchy? Definetely sounds like an allergic reaction to something, like in my mares case nettles! Tbh any kind of antibacterial should do the same thing as hibiscrub you just don't want it to be to harsh on the skin. Have you got any tea tree oil? Could you try keeping him in and seeing if they go down? If your concerned ring your vet and talk it through with them.
 
he was trying to strached against the wall when he was tied up so that that was obviously bothering him and was kicking his back feet like he would as if he was trying to get rid of flies.. why i thought fly bites (but under the rug?). Nope have no tea tree oil either.
I been and brought a fly rug this morning for tonight incase it was the flies.. but when i go back later will see if any change if not will have a word with the vet. Thank you x
 
was he too warm last night ? my cob gets those sort of bumps when over rugged - they are really itchy but go down over a few days.
or was the rug new? one of the horse on our yard reacted to a new rug in a similar way . They bathed it twice a day with medicated shampoo and it went down quickly. Hope its better soon.
 
Hard to tell if he was too hot over night cause he had been galloping around the field for 10minutes before he let me catch him so was sweating due to that... but no rugs not new.

It could be the horse equivalent of "prickly heat", some horses can get blocked pores due to having rugs on for long periods of time. I worked on a showjumping yard a few years ago and one horse had a similar sounding, incredibly itchy rash on his flank from where his coat hadn't been exposed to the air for a while due to over-rugging. They were kept indoors 24/7 over winter with 2-3 heavy stable rugs on at any one time so it's no wonder their pores got clogged up with grease...

The yard owner gave me a bottle of something to wash the area with but I can't for the life of me remember what it was :/ I guess it was some kind of cleansing/ soothing shampoo to help unblock the pores and soothe the itch, as the horse visibly relaxed once I had massaged this stuff into the area and rinsed it out.

Hope you get him sorted soon, if it's the same as what Winston had then I hope you can get it cleared up quickly :)
 
possibly - depends on how hot he was I suppose. i think I would bathe the area in any event with something mild and medicated - hibi can be a bit harsh. If its still there in a day or so get the vet to have a look in case it is an allergic reaction that needs treating. Is his temp and mouth ok ?
