Does anyone have any experience using one of these?

I don't have access to a manege so don't have anywhere to school my horse. I also don't have any transport so can't take him anywhere unless I hack him there, which is pretty impossible at the moment with working every day and the lack of light after 4pm

My friend has been using one on her horse while hacking out and she says it's a wonderful bit of kit and that I should think about getting one. My worry is, that I've never used one before and am concerned that I wouldn't know how to fit it correctly (assuming that it has to be fitted to suit each individual horse!).

Any advice or experiences would be warmly welcomed. :D

It is only my opinion - but I don't like them. I don't think they are designed to be ridden in ( as there is no break or release point if the horse panics) and I haven't been impressed by the action on the lunge either!

That said, a colleague of mine, who is a very accomplished horsewoman, swears by them. Hey ho! :D

In addition to the above - you can do a lot of good schooling while you hack - making the horse forward from the leg, lengthening and shortening the outline and steps, lateral work etc. No gadgets required - just patience and correct application of the aids!!

I would tend to use one on a lunge for my youngster whilst using two lunge lines .

She is a nosey bugger so gets her focused on me and helps her relax and stretch over her back .

As for riding in, I personally wouldn't .

I know, but to be honest, schooling whilst out hacking takes the enjoyment out of the hack if you know what I mean. We love our hacks out together and it's my way of relaxing. Many a time I've set off and thought to myself "Right, I'm going to school while we hack today" but I get bored of it very easily and then give up

On the occasions we've schooled in a manege, I've seen it through to the end. I think it's all to do with my mindset to start off with. "I'm in the school, we have a job to do, let's do it!" Does that make sense?

Guess I just have to be more disciplined with myself and make sure I spend at least part of the hack schooling. It's so difficult at this time of year though when sometimes all we have time for is a quick hack around the block anyway. :(

Roll on spring aye? :)

But schooling whilst hacking can be fun!

I do zig zags on the quiet roads, which is basically leg yielding from one side to the other!
They also learn to stand still whilst I am blackberry picking ;)
Cantering along side of fields works on straightness, and your reactions as you suddenly jolt sideways - thanks Mr.Bird ;)
You just need to make it fun :)

As for bungees, hate them. My old pony came trained on the bungee - and when he came off his nose went straight in the air. Took a full year to get him working correctly!
