super pic, he's lovely. how did you get on?
i have to say it, i'm sorry... girths with elastic on one end only are the work of the devil. i really hope that one has elastic at both ends...!

Unless you do the girth up with the elastic on the off side, and only do it up from the floor, don't touch it once you're on

Umm, as the horse jumps a fence of any decent size, as he lifts his ribcage will move and expand, and an elastic-at-1-end-only girth will give only on that side, allowing the saddle to jack-knife along the horse's spine. This can make them crooked, obv, and isn't good for their backs.

I was told this by a very experienced saddler, fwiw, i didn't make it up!

I have one with elastic on both ends, bought from Burghley that very day, for that very reason!

He was clear, albeit green - think two strides in a short one double on a long striding horse downhill towards the collecting ring! - but the only one in our team to go clear so we didn't get to j/o. I was really proud of him, it's the biggest course we've ever jumped together and in the biggest arena in front of the most people! So yeah, I was pleased, especially was we were told we should aim for it next year.

Not heard that before, but agree it does make sence!!

I've never had girths with elastic anyway (prefer leather ones)... but i always think that when it's on the near side, it's very easy to over girth the horse when you're doing the girth up from on top.

We've got a leather one with elastic on both ends... when he (finally) gets his new saddles he'll be getting stud guards and stuff too, he is quite a careful horse.

It was only 1.10m! I havent jumped that big since i was in ponies and L hasn't jumped a course that big in his life bless him lol, so it seemed quite big to us. He made it feel easy though - think he's ready to do a bit more now.

I didn't think it was any whaere near up to height this year, perhaps because the ground was so wet, I geuss the fence in the photo was the biggest on the course and was certainly the bogey fence. It was getting on 3'6" but the rest of the course was dissappointingly small, prob just below 3'3"
