Burghley Veterans...Advise please!

Hi,

My lovely hubby is taking me to Burley for my birthday

he has booked a hotel for the Saturday night. I have just been looking at their website and whilst I know that the tickets are not on sale yet I want to know what I want so I am ready to buy them on the 1st May.

I am a tad confused over which ones are the best to get as I am a Burghley Virgin

I have looked at buying tickets for the Saturday & Sunday and parking for both days and its £80. I have seen also that you can buy Membership for the event at the cost of £125 for 2 of you (that includes all admission, access to the Members Enclosure & 'forward parking' whatever that is!). I think in addition you have to buy tickets for the Granstand on Sunday to see the Showjumping however you buy tickets.....Is that right?

Is it worth the extra £45 for the Members tickets? Do the tickets sell very quickly and do you have to buy tickets for the Grandstand to watch the showjumping?

Oh DEFFO go for membership - I have never been to Burghley, but if it is a treat then go for the whole hog! You shouldn't actually need grandstand tickets for the SJ if hte members tent is well situated and on the main arena, as you can watch from there. Forward parking means you park nearer the entrance than the other minions - VERY good, and also you will have loos to use that others cannot (that for me is always important!!!)
 
Hi - just thought I'd better say that you cannot see the showjumping arena from the member's tent - apart from the bits on the tvs they have in there - to see the show jumping in real life you will need tickets unless you want to stand at the far end - but this gets crowded quite quickly.We buy member's passes and show jumping tickets - its the show jumping tickets where the best seats go early that you need to worry about - we have been fortunate in the last couple of years and bought members passes on trot up day along with a couple of seats in the uncovered section for the showjumping - got the back row and took a big umbrella for sun or rain. The forward parking is nearer to the members tent , scoreboard and tradestands - ideal for lugging all the shopping back to the car and handy for the Burgley young event horse class - just be aware on the Saturday night that it can be awkard to get out the 'right' exit and you may find you have a bit of a detour to get back to your hotel - we ended up heading down the A1 to London one year! Also make sure you tie your members pass on tight - mine dropped off one year on the first day and they definitely don't give you another. Have a great time .

. I will order the tickets when they go on sale. If the traffic is too bad on the Saturday night we can always stay behind and have a drink or two and leave when the traffic has died down a bit. I'm very excited ! I must start saving for the shopping LOL
 
Absolutely, go for red carpet at this event. Especially if you go mad and buy loads of stuff it'll be a quick 10 mins back to the car drop it off and you'll have been able to see XC whilst you did it - great day out, have a good one I'm there on the Friday this year business you understand

I used to go to school slap bang next to Burghley (we used to sneak out and smoke in the groundsm tut tut tut) - have only every been to the XC due to cash flow problems, but if its a treat I 100% agree with Weezy - go for the membership, you want the whole experience!!
 
ooooor (for anyone) if you get the chance go on the your horse package they organise, go down on dressage night to a 4* for a 3 course meal and a talk with a top rider or something (had chris bartle last year and mary king the year before) then next day after gorg breakfast coach down for course walk (we had karen dixon last year), do your own thing for rest of day, coach back to hotel,meal next day coach down again for grandstand tickets, coach bak and go home. Absolutely (omg i cant spell) fantastic weekend

Hope your hotel is better than the one we stayed in a few years ago ... it was OH's treat, bless him, he thought it would be a picturesque inn in a country village - turned out to be a dodgy place about 10m away from the A1, we were kept awake with thundering lorries all night!

Oh and make sure you set off early on Saturday even if your hotel is really near .. the road gets VERY busy.
 
Yes was just going to warn you about the traffic - the A1 gets very busy with a tailback of traffic crawling in on the Saturday morning - the road through Stamford can also get quite busy. Recommend you aim to get there quite early on the Saturday. We drive in on a country road which passes over the A1 and have seen traffic starting to back up on the A1 as early as 9.30am.
 
the expensive tickets are well worth it for the forward parking..... you will be right by the members area and if you use regular parking, like at badminton, you might as well take an extra day out to get back to your car!
 
We are staying at the Barnsdale Hall Hotel, its about 12 miles from Burghley. Poor hubby booked the hotel in November and that was the closest he could get

We are going to go for the membership tickets without a doubt, I will just have to remember to book them on 1st May!
 
Forgot to say that we are planning on getting there for 7.30 on the Saturday morning, the gates open then and I've promised hubby breakfast

I'm a Burghley veteran and have been going for years. We tend to rent a caravan at a local camp site to cut down on costs and always go for the membership package. If anyone else goes apart from the two people it covers you can buy extra membership badges and tickets for them.

Advantages of membership are:

Brilliant parking - so you can dump your shopping several times - yet get in and out of the site much easier and are pushed through to car parks really close to the shopping area.

Toilets on a Saturday are nasty with long queues but you get access to the members enclosure toilets which are much nicer and dont have the queues.

Members enclosure does serve food but tends to be pretty expensive so we do avoid eating in there - taking a pack up is the cheapest.

Free access to watch the dressage on Thursday and Friday - you do have to sit in a certain area but get a great view.

You do need to buy showjumping tickets for the Sun - there is a free bit but it really does get overcrowded and the tickets are not that expensive if you get the cheaper ones.

The one thing I will say is that Sat and Sun is just not enough time - I would be tempted to get hubby to book the hotel for a longer period and stay for the full membership time - Thurs to Sun. There is so much going on over the preceding few days - young event horse comps, dressage, talks, demos and SHOPPING - (which is impossible to do on Sat because it gets overcrowded)

we have already got a few weeks booked off for bits and bobs and I think it would be too much, but, if hubby really enjoys it then I might try the caravan avenue next year, take a week off and do all 4 days.

I'm sure I'll manage a bit of shopping, if I can do the Next Sale I can do Burghley!!!

I only go if I have members tickets its really worth the extra, on sat you can park in the trees out front of the house & no probs getting out or finding car
