There is a livery yard near me. It has footpaths going round it.
They set their muck heap on fire for weeks/months at a time. The smoke then comes over the footpath so you have to go a different way or hold your breath. And the dogs don't like going through it either
is there anything i can do about it? Is it legal to burn it?

Yep, not allowed to burn a big muck heap, has to be taken away by a licensed carrier or spread on land.

But muck heaps can smoke spontaneously, which would go on for days and weeks, do you actually see flames and them 'tending' it? ie do they def set it alight? Im just curious as if they did actually burn it, it wouldnt go on for weeks at a time, it would be a short period (day say) and then big gap and then another day the next time. Unless the muck heap is the size of a landfill site....

TBH I go past all sorts of bonfires on farms out hacking and horses and dogs dont like it much but it doesnt bother me too much. However if it was right next to the path and a permanent event then that would be different.

Just say your follow up post, yep as they are causing a nuisance with it I think its fair to report it. But have you tried speaking to them first. that would seem fairer? they may not be aware it is causing a problem?

My muck heap burns all the time if you keep adding dry bedding to it daily! It smoulders more than burns to be fair it's more or less out side my back door but I have no neighbours so dosnt affect anyone else

Constantly burning muck heaps really pee me off.
Next door keep theirs going 24/7 & the acrid smoke picks up across my fields most days. Its right against my boundary too.
Hate falling out, but last spring/summer/autumn was a right (smelly & choking) pain on many occasions :(

you have to google bonfire laws in your area. most are un controlled. though people think that it is illegal to burn after a certain time of night!. personally i would speak to your local council, and environmental agency for guidance on this.

It surely would be better to either speak to them but if not drop a note in the post to ask them to stop burning and that you will report them if they dont stop. Does seem a shame to get them fined if they have done it for years. I think most people know burning it is illegal but I know people that still do this.

Shame to get them wacked with a fine without a warning first. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal, but not something that is really policed. I admit, ours get burnt in the summer when the horses are not in the stables, and the wind (if any) is going in the right direction to not affect anything but our land. Its not a big muck heap really, and would not be that much bigger than some garden bonfires :)

Constantly burning would annoy me though, I'd be having a word to the owner first, then the relevant people. :)
