Busy people, how far do you guys travel to get to your horses?

I am moving house in 2 months will be 15 mile from the horses, have been looking to move them closer to my new home but I can't find anywhere I like that compares to my lovely little yard!

I basically work full time, a studying part time for my level 3 in hairdressing, working in a salon on saturday as part of my course. also do hairdressing in the evenings and help at my ww meeting on a wednesday evening, trying to lose weight so I try and get to the gym a few nights a week!

so thinking about leaving the horses where they are but worried that I'll be getting up at 5am to see them, not getting home until 8-9ish each night and worried ill be even more broken than I already am (which is pretty broken)
 
Stupid android!! I commute about three or four hours a day depending how busy the trains are! My horse is about three miles from home but in the opposite direction to work. I'm lucky enough that she's done in the mornings for me, and people are kind enough to check waters and swap rugs for me if she needs it. I'm
 
Horses are at home thankfully, couldn't cope if I had to travel any more than I already do!

I would ditch the gym though and cycle to the yard a couple of times a week

the summer will be fine, its just going back into the winter!

my prob is, I have them on a private yard, where its down to me what happens! we have 10 arces, 3 horses and 2 minis so plenty of grass, 2 shelters, 2 stables for storage, as they all live out, a massive barn for hay etc!

and i pay next to nothing! what I've been looking at is further away from my new horse, costs more money and i get far less and willl have to share with people!! haha I think i've been far too spoilt for far to long!
 
I work full time 42 hrs a week with a minimum of 1 1/2 hrs to drive to work each way if I'm lucky. My girl is a mile and a half from my house. I'm lucky that its a private stud so she is seen to in a morning and I do the evenings. That still means I get up for work at 6am to get to work. Then go straight to the yard after work. I usually get home at 0730pm. They are long days I would personally look nearer to home if I were you. Like others have said not such a problem in summer but winters will be hard.
 
I work full time in 'split shifts' (8am to some point at lunchtime, then again 4 - 8/8.30pm). Horses are fitted in before, after and in the middle, I rent a small yard to myself so there's only me to do them no matter what.

I'm up at about 5, get ready, go and either turn out or hay + water them with a quick skip out, and then off to work. After the morning shift I go straight back to the yard to muck out and poo pick the field in daylight as well as sometimes bring in depending on weather, then back home and back into work. After work a quick change of clothes and back to the yard to either skip out and give night nets or bring in. I tend to get in to sit down around 9, then in bed by 10.

You get into a routine, it's doable. I make up feeds in bags for the week so that saves time, and as many haynets as I can. Tidying up the hay barn etc is left for my one free day of the week!
 
I get up at 5am every day to fit everything into my life! And that I have to add is with no children, my horse is a 5 min walk away and currently I work from home!!!
 
I work pretty much full time, although do get to work from home 2 days/week which saves on travelling time. Horses (7 of them, stabled) are on private yard 4-5 miles from house, about 10 min drive. Up at 5.30 Yard at 6.30. Feed, change rugs etc, turnout 5 unless weather hideous. Muck out the 2 staying in (1 on box rest + a buddy for him). Carry on mucking out until 8 - drive to station, run for train to London! Work all day, no lunch hour, eat at desk. Leave office at 5.45 if I can get away - arrive back at yard about 6.45. Finish mucking out, re muck out box rest +1, steam hay, fill haylage nets, make feeds. Get 5 in, wash legs, groom etc etc. Change rugs. Maybe ride 1 or 2 if time/motivation! (More likely on work from home days!)
Get back home about 9.30-10. Too tired to eat - collapse on sofa, fall aslep, wake up at 1am with cricked neck. Go to bed.
Hubby does come to yard in evening, but likes to stand and watch me work...more than help.
My tip - ditch the gym to save some time - if you're putting in the physical work mucking out, sweeping, grooming, riding etc etc - you won't need it!
 
My horse is about 15 miles away. YO does mornings (just either feed if staying in or turnout) then I do nights. Work full time 42 hrs, pck daughter up from school at 4pm, if she's riding we have tea first, get changed and drive to the yard. I muck out and she rides. Get home about 8pm
 
Oh Kerrie its rubbish having to move.

The only thing I can say is my new yard is 10miles away from me and when I was going everyday it was hard as the roads are not the best either. Now that Zoe does him three days in the week it is so much easier. maybe you could do a rota so you don't have to go everyday? Or get a freelance groom to help?

Just think about all the driving plus poo picking and everything else you are going to have to do as well.

Maybe give it a go and see how you get on. Have you managed to find any yards with spaces?

For several years I was up at 04:00 - 30 and off the five miles to the yard, do my two and turn out then check on retired pony - sometimes I'd also do someone else's as we used to share reciprocal duties - I'd often fit in a ride around the block too - then back home, shower, change and off to London with the boss around 06.30- 07.00 Office till 18:30- 19:00 home again, quick change and down to the yard - bring in, exercise in the dark - sometimes I'd even ride around the local wood in pitch black - sit in box while mare ate her tea, home for dinner at 21 - 22:00 - same again next day five days a week - Sat/Sun all day with the mare!

The person I shared duties with was a girl day trader up town - high pressure job - it blew her out in two years but lucky her - she'd made enough money to RETIRE at 28!
 
Can't quote on phone, but Suzie G, does that mean that if your horse is staying in the YO doesn't muck out, and the horse stands in a dirty box all day?
