Iv recently purchased a happy mouth French link for my young mare the creamy plastic ones. The other day was our 3rd ride in it and I noticed her skin became flakey in the corner of her mouth. She seemed irritated during our ride snatching the reins throwing her head mouth wide open I thought it was her just wanting to 'go' as we hadn't ridden in 4weeks but then seeing her mouth made me think she may have been uncomfortable. What's other people's experience with these bits? She's a cob and has very large lips if that makes a difference.

Try a little Vaseline in the corners of her mouth before you put her bridle on - some of these synthetic or rubber bits can chafe when the but is slightly dry.

Also keep a careful eye on it as they chip and develop rough areas where the horse chews them.

I so prefer the Stainless steel or sweet iron bits

Thank you. We have always used stainless steel but she bit chomped and this bit seemed to have helped stop it. Maybe a sweet iron would be better?

Sounds as though she has mouth issues ......... cobs may have thick tongue , need a different shape, she should have a bit of saliva to lubricate, ask a BHSII instructor for a lesson and mention the problem, she may even have something for you to try.
I like Neu Schule, the do give advice but you need to know mouth conformation, maybe get an EDT out first.

Thank you for your advice, we had the dentist about 2months ago and she was ridden in a ported kimblewick at the time and I was told shape was it was a good bit due to her having a big tongue and fleshy lips but then was adviced to change to a milder bit as she's still young.

You can get a snaffle with a Cambridge mouthpiece - same shape as the Kimblewick.

Were you using the reins on the lower slots, otherwise put the reins on to the main ring and leave off the curb chain. If she likes it - then remove the chain hooks or get a Cambridge snaffle

Will look for a Cambridge snaffle :)
We used the reins on the top slots and hooked the chain on the loosest ring
