Bute and self medicating

I'm in pain with my hip

My painkillers aren't helping and can't get to the doctors as it's the weekend.
I have a few sachets of bute here, can I take it?
Also what would be the best way to take it?
Should I snort it or maybe smoke it, for maximum effect?

actually knew a vet who had a really bad back who used to take a bit of bute!! he used to open a sachete and stick his finger in he'd only have a little bit tho!!! i dont recomend it looking back he was a bit mad!

Ring NHS Direct for help with human medicating. You don't know what dosages you would need..

They are very helpful. Did you know that you can take Ibuprofen AND paracetamol at the same time? Take the brufen every 6 hours, and arrange it so that you are taking the paracetamol inbetween the brufen. It worked for me and my tooth abcesses.

Indeed you can, but NOT Ibuprofen and Aspirin as they are the same family.
 
Do not take any bute - it is not safe for human consumtion
Paracetmol or Ibuprofen or Co Codamal from a pharmacy.
From a health website--
Humans should not inhale the powder or ingest Bute. Wash hands immediately after administering Bute. In humans, bone marrow, renal, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal side effects are associated with use of Phenylbutazone.
 
Mmm, they used to give bute to people under certain circumstances but it's since been replaced by much safer and more effective medications. It's just a standard NSAID and, while it certainly can have dangerous side effects, that's true for lots of meds that are "safe" for human consumption.

I'm not advocating taking it but the amount you might get on your hands, say, or inhale in the process of giving it to a horse is not going to do someone serious harm so don't panic if you haven't been ultra careful with it in the past.

That said, it's neither particularly safe or really any more effective than any other NSAID so it's not going to help you any more than anything you can buy over the counter. And it does have the potential for more serious side effects than other such drugs. I read an interesting story once about an "outbreak" of a very dangerous disease called aplastic anaemia in, I believe New York, state years ago. The original thought was all of the affected men had been exposed to some sort of pathogen. Partly right. Turns out they were all ex/old-jockey/track workers and had taken copious amounts of bute for years. (presumably around the time it became commonly available). It had taken decades for the effects to show but they were certainly serious when they did.

So not a good plan.

i took a bit of bute by accident once (did the whole rip the packet open blew up in my face thing) didn't do me any harm sorry can't be much help otherwise
