Bute as a hangover cure!

I would like to stress I have never ever tried this!

Someone told me (not a close friend but she is Horsey) that she swears by Bute for curing a hangover! I was so shocked, I won't be trying it anytime soon. Stupid girl.

Has anyone else come across this?

Id say someones yanking your chain, a dose of bute would possibly get you a visit to hospital where you could sleep off your hangover with the dodgiest gut possible, thats if you survived taking a sachet

Yes bute used to be licensed as a human NSAID. It had its human licence removed due to being linked to liver failure with prolonged use.

So its safe to take small amounts not very often. Used commonly on race yards. Yes it does seem to help hangovers!

We used to use it to deal with the after-party feeling whilst grooming at 3-day-events. We were young and foolish though, and I certainly wouldn't use it nowadays.
Bute was orginally developed as a human drug, but was banned because of the side effects

Yep, a yard I was on it was a common hangover cure & it bloody works as well

I believe it's because instead of the liver trying to process the metabolites (which is the broken down ethanol & what makes you feel like crap) processing the bute takes priority....so it acts in tge same way as 'hair of the dog'

I think if you take too much its pretty good at causing heart failure/ death too. I would stick paracetamol and water, or even better not drinking much in the first case!
p.s 1/2 a sachet is a lot for a person! :/

People love folk remedies. They maybe think "the old ways are the best" - which may be true in some cases, but not all.

Seriously! Some people just have a death wish!

A sachet of bute contains enough painkiller for a 500kg horse.

The max dose for a human (when phenylbutazone was used in humans) was 200/250mg at once.

Well it makes sense. It's an anti-inflamatory and a pain killer.

I've heard of a sprinkle of bute and a splash of red cell as a pick me up after a heavy night. Bute is still prescribed to people for bad arthritis, on occasion - not ideal in the long term as a result of liver issues - not sure of dosage tho.

It was commonly used as a hangover cure when I was young not as such as half a packet though it did work .
My father took it for several years before it was withdrawn from human use.
Metacam works as well.
Not advisable though.

All you need is something called 'Resolve' , does exactly the same, about £4 a box and it isn't going to kill you/cause harm!
Has always worked for me

Yep I've used it in the past. As others have said, mustn't use a lot. I was once silly enough to use half a sachet, and felt pretty awful! More like 1/5 of a sachet is best, and it's pretty darn good
