yup, my mum's mare is allergic to it, or intollernt, one of the two and the main outcome is serious runny poo!!! almost water like!! shame as my mums mare really could do with some bute
he has a reaction to loads of drugs and either goes hyper or gets diahorrea (sometimes both). Unfortunatley he is on but long term for his eye but he doesnt seem to have a problem when it is less then once every 2 days. Luckily he is now on it 3 times a week so he isnt getting it but i dread the flare ups! Vet said nothing can be done about it in his case either
Might be worth a check with your vet - I had a horse with navicular syndrome who was on bute and he had diarrhoea and ulcers in his mouth - it was a reaction to the bute and it did cause some permenant damage to his gut and he found it difficult to absorb nutrients. This was quite a major reaction, but might be just worth checking.
Aww, bless her. Have you considered giving her some pink powder or something?!
Be is, well, short term prognosis is good, but long term is bad
She is still at the vets and lame, but standing on the leg, and her usual lovable self; charming all the staff there. They are next assessing her on Tue, but the plan is after a week of boxrest, some small paddock rest. That should cure the lameness from where she's been bleeding into the joint, but not the state of the osteoarthritis.
Long term, she's looking like a LOU case and a future as a Mummy...
I'm heartbroken.
It's 8 months today since my accident. A year ago I would never have believed we would come to this
It may be worth asking your vet if you can try Danilon instead? It is an alternative to bute and is just as effective in my experience. One of mine is seriously allergic to bute and so always has Danilon. It is a little more expensive, but not by much, so i would say it was definately worth a try. It is supposed to be less damaging long term as well, although it is a fairly new product, so we don't obviously know the long term effects just yet.
I would also say to put your horse on Yea-Sacc which really helps to stabilise the gut and will make a huge difference. I feed both of mine Yea-Sacc all the time and it has worked really well. Some of the probiotics actually can increase acidity in the gut, which wouldn't help in your case.
