Ok I am in a muddle the above are painkillers right?
I ask because my friends pony got very lame recently but has almost completly recovered now. Another person at the yard (should be very experienced and the owners of the horse are quite novice when it comes to vet care type things) gave the owner sachets of bute and danilon to give her as it will apperently stop her re-injuring herself.

Am I missing something?

They are both painkillers, bute is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (as is aspirin for humans). Danilon is I believe just a different painkiller but I'm not familiar with it.

Neither will prevent injury, they are just painkillers.

(butes full name is phenylbutazone)

Thats what I thought, as far as I know they are both quite similar. But just strange that this person said this

It's actually more likely to reinjure itself if it overdoes it whilst on painkillers/if it's ridden whilst its lameness is masked.

Danilon is just sugat coated bute basically. It's a pro-drug which is converted by the body into phenylbutazne (the active ingredient in bute). it's meant to be kinder on the GI tract because of this, but supporting evidence is sketchy. Mainly i give it because it tastes nicer and is much easier to get them to eat it. They're both NSAID's and neither will prevent injury.

No-one should be giving out either drug without a vets say so. This is a prescription medicine and as such should be treated wth respect.....as previously said none of the meds mentoned wll stop a pony hurting itself and if given too much this is actually more lkely. Bit like us taking pain killers stops us feeling pain. You would not do this if you had a bad back for example.
I hope this animal was ok though

Both bute and danilon are anti-inflamatories as well as pain killers just wondered if they thought the horse still had some inflamation and needed to continue to sort this out. Otherwise cant see any sense in it

Both are painkillers as mentioned in other replies. Neither will prevent injury, as other respondents have mentioned it is more likely to cause injury if a problem is being masked and not fully resated. Bute is given far too readily in my opinion, if a horse is hurting it is for a reason, it is natures way of saying "please rest me!". Yet people think they are kind in giving Bute which will simply allow the horse to work a muscle/ligament that needs resting. The problem with Bute/Danilon is that it is not good for horses long term. It is much better to feed devils claw for long term problems. The best on the market is "Bute Substitute" from Equine Answers which is very strong in Devils Claw but yet cheaper. Their website is www.equineanswers.co.uk

I have not heard of equine answers but i know subst-bute is meant to be good is made by nettex and u can buy online which is great
