Hi All

My boy is off in for Cataract surgery next week and I have to give bute 5 days before.
Now, the bute isn't the problem - he eats it fine in his tea, the problem is he won't eat his breakfast - never does, would much prefer to be in his field. Im avoiding syringing it down as its a pain to do as it doesn't dissolve in the water and you end up squirting loads of water down his throat - he's not the easiest with a wormer/syringe

So I need all your inventive ideas of how to spike him with bute:D

I mix mine in natural yoghurt and syringe that in. Because it tastes nice they soon forget they don't like syringes!

Other wise use an apple corer to hollow out a hole in a small apple and pour it in there. Just feed the apple whole and hopefully it should go down.

If he likes apples this might work:

Halve a smallish apple, scoop out the core, mix the bute with a teaspoon of honey, scrape back into the scooped-out bits and it'll help stick the two halves together again.

Feed to boy!
ETA cross posted with Jess and Monty...!

At a riding school I worked at they fed bute to a horse in a jam sandwich and she gobbled it up every day! Depends on whether you're comfortable feeding your horse bread, as people have mixed views on it.

I like your variation Mrs B. The honey probably makes it much easier to handle. My way you have to hold it up the right way or it all pours out!!

We had one that wouldn't eat his bute in his feed at all, so we mixed it with dried mint and icing sugar, bit of water and rolled it into a couple of balls - leave it to set in the fridge if you can, and feed like a treat, we found it was wolfed down, no problems!
(I know adding sugar isn't ideal for some horses, but it wasn't much, just to bind the mint and bute together)

THe pony that's bitten into one five days on the trot and found the inside taste like bute:D

OK good point:D but come Tuesday is the AHT's problem - :D phew, mind they'll probably give him back to me with double the dose to administer.
Shopping list so far:
apples
honey
strawberry jam
bread
Vodka (thats for me)
yoghurt
anything else...?
