bute...

I was looking yesterday as I have run out..........no perscription only, so I am going to try some of these 'alternatives' - Bute X ( I think that is what it is called) and the one you get in a paste for emergencies.

well i went to chemist direct and you could put it in the basket but had to tick a box to say you had a prescription...what woul happen if i ticked to say i had it when i don't.... anything/nothing?

yes i can but they are stingy and won't send very many...wanted to try and buy a box to have in....there are so many times when its useful to have but you don't want to have to get the vet out every five minutes... ;)

sadly you cant buy it online without a prescription. if you check the box to say you have one you also have to email/fax/post them a the prescription to prove you have one before they will send it out.

I wanted some bute for my old horse who is fine most of the time but finds it hard to hold his hind legs up for the farrier. I was told it is prescription only and the vet couldn't prescribe over the phone as they haven't seen the horse in the last 6 months. Fair enough I suppose, but it means I am having to wait till the next vet visit and ask them to prescribe it then.

Recent changes to prescribing rules mean that the vet should see the horse before prescribing bute, as mentioned above. Once seen, I think they can send it to you on request without a visit for up to a year.
