Thanks to my 17 year old monster, behaving like a 2 year old in the field on Sunday, i have a lovely swollen fetlock, and seen as Bute is no longer available over the counter, does anybody know any other popular products that do the same job, and have actually used them?

Thanks in advance!

Danillon is what I now use on the recommendation of my vet instead of Bute. It's far kinder on the system, but does the same thing.

I use Danilon too, still has to come through the vet though. No-bute and other things are supposed to be good, not actually used them though.

I don't like using lots of Bute because of what it does to their systems but a friend uses the No Bute and she says it seems to work quite well but it is always good to try other things isn't it

Danilon and bute are very similar drugs, but danilon granules are coated. This is meant to make them gentler on the gastrointestinal tract, but since the side effects of NSAIDS are due to their systemic effects rather than as a result of direct irritation of the stomach/gut this makes little difference when they are used at high doses or long term.
No anti-inflammatory drugs are available over the counter. If your horse is very lame then it would be wise to get a vet out. If your horse has injured himself hooning around then giving him bute may mask his injury and he may do himself further damage. Bute etc. have very little effects in reducing swelling and are really just pain killers.
