Buttercup Burn or Bot Fly?

Hi guys,

I've just come back off a 2 week holiday and found my horse has 2 sore on his mouth similar to the picture.

The first one is on the left hand side about 1/2 an inch from the corner of his mouth.

The second one is on his right hand side of his muzzle.

Neither appear to bother him, but they're very unsightly.

I believe they're buttercup burns as we do have a fair few in our fields; however, another lady has suggested bot flies, although he's groomed every day and I've never seen eggs.

What do you think?

Sorry I have no idea but I will be intrigued to see what the replies are to as my mare has one exactly the same as yours only on her bottom lip

I've always just left them to be honest, they heal pretty quickly on their own. And of course, have attempted to remove the source (or the horse from the source.....)

Hello

My horse has suffered from these in the past - but I have not seen buttercups at our farm for absolutely ages? Or can they be caused by the odd/random buttercup?

Sorry not trying to contradict anyone :o

My mare actually had one present once when she had the vet (for another issue) but the vet had no idea either?

They never bothered her - I'd just like to know what they are and what causes them :)
