What effects can buttercups have on horses, i know they can cause sores in/around the mouth and colic if excessive amounts are eaten.
Are there any other effects?

Buttercups sap contains chemicals that are highly irritable. Horses eat buttercups only reluctantly but their eating can cause ulceration and inflammation of the mouth, with loss of appetite and drooling of saliva colic and diarrhea .
Persistent contact with buttercups will also result in inflammation and blistering around the coronet
They are find dried in meadow hay.

The reason i asked about the effects is a horse on the yard started coughing, had been fully vetted a week or so before and after being seen by the vet a few times (i think it was more than once) they suggested it could be the buttercups, he was taken off the buttercups at night and in a part of field with much less buttercups (had been topped) during the day and coughing stopped.

My horses both love buttercups and will eat them even if grass is available in abundance. I havent found them to have these side effects above as limit their intake obviously but one does have every summer when buttercups come out a reaction to her face and belly which I am wondering ifit is buttercup related - she itches like mad and loses hair??
