ive just travelled half way around england 2 view 2 horses and both were not wat the seller promised, i was very careful to ask certain questions b4 i viewed these, i travelled to truro after the owner promised me a complete novice hack 4 a friend , yet wen she rode it bucked her and the owner straight off, then i travelled to birmingham some 200 miles away again to look at a 20 yr old very healthy novice cob, and wen we got there she was very stiff and lame, then the owner was rude wen i said she looks lame, she shouted , "is she wat your lookin 4 or not " , we just left asap, im sure not everyone is like this , but wat angers me is i have to pay 4 a box and driver, and fuel, sorry to rant , lol
 
Which is why I determined not to travel more than 2 hours to go and look at horses when I was shopping.

this is why i use horsequest. there's enough free space for people to write an essay (no word limit), a few photos allowed, and it helps you get a feel for the horse and owner beforehand. i've both bought and sold through it and had a great experience both times.
tbh a good, reputable dealer is also not a bad idea - they have their reputation to protect, unlike private sellers.
fwiw i've travelled all over the place in the past, and seen horses that have aged and shrunk overnight...

When I was looking for my lad we looked at the internet for horses but realised that we could be lured all over the country & have similar experiences to what you have experienced. My YO said that there are loads of horses around & we should be able to find the one we want within 50 miles. Well we did, 35 miles away, was actually advertised in H&H.

Set yourself limits otherwise you'll spend hundreds of pounds on unnecessary diesel.
 
I never travel further than 50 miles... But if I couldn't find what I was looking for close to home, then getting someone local to check for me would be a good idea... the cost of diesel is ridiculous as it is without wasting a whole tank on a unsuccessful journey.

In some cases so that you can offer half the asking price in cash to the seller on the proviso that you can take the horse away there and then without a vetting.....
 
in an ideal world i would like to buy local but when living on the east coast you do have to travel a fair way to get anywhere!!

one thing i must say is get as many photos etc and ask as mnay q's as possible as its a much easier way to get an idea about a horse/person that way
 
thanks for the support, i took a trailer with me cause it was so far away and didnt want to return, the seller said if i wanted to buy i could take him away there and then, i never have a vetting unless over 2500, for insurance, but i try to take as many experienced people with me as we can fit in ..i was hoping to get a winter bargain.

Why did you have to pay for a box and driver? Surely you didnt turn up with a box as if you'd buy it and take it home same day?

I'm happy to travel to view horses but I usually ask to see video footage first. Usually works very well as you can see what you're getting before going.
